Sue, all you have to do is highlight it, right click it, and click on "add to dictionary" and it will do just that. It's the dictionary in YOUR computer which is the one which works, not any Yahoo! Answers dictionary. They only pick words they don't like (and some I, as an Australian, find quite inoffensive) and replace them with asterisks.

Because spell checking programs are electronic versions of dictionaries. And dictionaries are written by old men in ivory towers who tend to be a bit haughty about today's internet slang.
That being said, I bet it will be in the dictionaries in 50 years, when today's cool kids are old and have moved into these towers.
It will probably become a regular verb, and I could imagine the spellng gets "regularized" a bit once the original meaning of the acronym fades: I lole, you lole, he loles, I loled, I have loled. (Just the way we write OK as "okay" today.)

despite how much we use LOL it's not officially a word so spell check doesn't recognize it yet. it will probably be added to the dictionary soon because new words are added based on their frequency of use.

You can program it so it will. You can modify it to accept/recognize your pet abbreviations, an unusually spelled name, anything. }:>
