Hiya,

I take citalopram and it doesn't delay your periods. However any change in mood such as stress, anxiety, depression can have an effect on periods. Also she is only 16 so it could be that her periods are not settled yet. And of course get her to take a test if she is pregnant she will need to speak to her GP about which anti depressants are safe to use in pregnancy.
Good luck.

That is a very difficult question to answer!!!
Citalopram is classed as a SSRI (Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitor). There is no specific mention of menstrual cycle interference with Citalopram.............. however, if my memory serves me correct, serotonin levels decrease at various stages of the menstrual cycle. I would assume therefore, that it must have an affect if your affecting the levels of Serotonin.
The quick answer has to be yes! If you want to find out more then do some googling around SSRI's - not specifically Citalopram and I'm sure you'll find the answer.
If I were in your shoes (or the young ladies) I'd be turning the PC off and getting myself to the chemist for a pregnancy test then you know for sure!
Hope this helps.

I took anti-depressants for around 18 months when i was 20, it never delayed my periods, but stress did, it could be this, but tell her to do a test just in case.

As far as I know anti-depressants do not affect hormone levels, which is what birth control pills do.

If she is underweight (or overweight) this can affect the frequency of her cycle. If I am under a lot of stress, this affects my cycle too, so maybe it's just that.
I suggest you get her a pregnancy test ASAP. If it isn't that, she needs to see her doctor to find out what's causing this to happen.

What many anti depressants like st johns wort can do is

STOP THE PILL OR OTHER HORMONE BASED CONTRACEPTION WORKING. Did you not read the instructions?

Ie you take st johns wort another popular anti depressent

IT RENDERED THE PILL USLESS

Ergo she may well be pregnant.

This is the kind of detail required in sex ed over and over again till it sinks in

According to wikipedia, there is no drug interactions with birth control pills and makes no mention of causing menstrual problems. However, it does have sexual side effects.
