Too many good ones to pick just one.
Queen, Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Boston, Def Leppard, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, KISS, Rolling Stones ...

I can go on.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also, if you think it's Marilyn Manson, he or it is not a rock band, and you cannot put him anywhere in the same discussions as the legends of rock I mentioned above.

There is no greatest of all time. Each group and artist made a contribution to music in general. Most of the previous answers mentioned groups or artists who were pioneers in one way or another but not the greatest.

The Smashing Pumpkins and all other bands are dragging many miles behind.

They are outstanding.

Makes the beatles, Nirvana and the Stones look like amateurs.

Probably a tie between Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath. They always broke new ground and are usually mentioned whenever any musician names inspirations or influences.

Led Zeppelin

That depends on your criteria .My criteria would be to pick the band that had the greatest overall impact on rock and roll and whose influence is still being felt today. It would have to be the Beatles, hands down.

Now if you want to narrow it down to a hard rock band, it would be a tie between the Rolling Stones and the Who. with the Who being the more innovated For heavy metal, no brainer - Led Zeppelin, they paved the way for all those who followed.
