Brainiacs: special character challenge!?

Question

Alright. My name has an "o" with ^ above it. How do I type this using my laptop keyboard without having to do a cut and paste from a Word document in which I can find this as a special character? I've seen people suggest Alt+...and then a series of certain numbers. Unless I'm doing something wrong, NOTHING shows up. Am I to press the keys one at a time? Keep Alt down, press the numbers in order, then let go of Alt and...there it is? Isn't there a way to just type the "o" then go back, press the "^" and combine the two? If not, please spell out EXACTLY how I'm supposed to press the keys. Seriously :^) It's the only thing I can think of for the Alt command not working. And I'm fairly computer literate. Alt 0212 for Ô or ALT 0244 for ô

Hold down ALT and on your number pad type whichever one of those you want then release ALT. You can only use the Number pad #s NOT the ones above the letters.

Alt and 0212= Ô

Alt and 0244= ô

**If it still won't work the your number lock isn't on. While holding "function" (fn) press and release "num lock" then try again =)

You can use the Alt codes to type special characters Turn on the Num Lock, hold down the ALT key and type in the number using the numerical keypad of your computer. Two sites below to show you some of the major ones.

There is also a character map on your computer. You can use it as well. Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Character Map

ALT codes only work using the Numeric keypad on a standard keyboard. The numbers at the top of the keyboard won't work.

That said, Read The Friendly Manual (RTFM) for your laptop, to use the numbers on and around the "k" key to emulate the NumPad.
