Hi, we had to cut the knots out of our one. He was a lionhead and usually matted up around his neck, we brushed him but when that didnt work, we had to cut them out.

They will not grow out and will become worse with time.
Also if not taken care of properly skin irritation and infection could also become a problem.
If you cannot find a groomer who can clip your rabbit, have a vet do it.
Rabbits skin is very sensitive and the stress caused to the skin by trying to comb or brush out the knots will cause more harm than good.
Never bathe a rabbit with knotted fur, this only makes it worse.
The over-all best solution to a problem of this nature is to keep the rabbits fur clipped short and brushed daily to prevent it from happening again.
If this is an angora type bunny, take extra caution in clipping the fur on the feet. Clip it too close and the rabbit will develop really nasty foot sores. So be very specific with who-ever clips the rabbits fur.

I suggest getting a bott comb. They cut fly eggs out of fur they are really good for grooming their fur and getting matts out. And once it starts growing out use a comb that has an in built razor to keep it at a containable stage. I would also suggest getting him professionally groomed once in a while. Maybe check out some websites relating to the breed and get some grooming tips to avoid it happening again.
But their hair grows pretty quickly so no stress ok!

No. They will only get worse.
Rabbit's skin and fur is a lot different to cat's and dog's. Their fur is much harder to detangle, it comes out easily, and their skin is very thin and tears easily.
It is important to get these matts sorted out - especially if they're around his back end, because poo will get stuck in them and as well as being very messy, this will attract flies. Go to a groomers that does rabbits, or preferably a vets as often rabbits need to be sedated to sort this out - the fur will need to be shaved off around this area because the skin can tear if the matts are pulled too hard. Once the matts are shaved out, regular brushing can prevent them regrowing.
I don't know if there's any groomers that can do this for you, but I know vets could.

No the acutal balls of fur won't grow out, they will just get worse, but if you groom it and you get the matts out that way the hair will grow back if you create any bald patches.
Some breeds are just very prone to getting matted hair no matter how much you comb them

No they wont grow out. They will become worse and get dirty making your rabbit seceptible to fly strike. (When flys lay eggs on rabbits and the maggots eat into the rabbit). This can kill him. You need to cut the matts out of his fur and then make sure that you groom him often to ensue that they dont return.
If he is a very long haired rabbit you might want to take him to groomers to have his fur trimmed. This will lessen the risk of him getting matted fur. It may not make for the best hair do, but it will certainly be better for his health.

If i were you i would take the rabbit to a professional rabbit groomer and have him totally clipped off. If you can't find a rabbit groomer then you could ask a dog/cat groomer and they may do it for you. I say this because then you can start all over again with the rabbits fur and try to keep on top of it a little better. It can't be comfortable for him with all those mattes on him. Or if you feel confident enough then you could do this yourself to save the money!

If you comb them out or cut them, the fur grows back fine. but they will not grow out on their own, the new fur would just tangle into the existing mat. Continue to brush him regularly. Mats are painful and damage the skin underneath.

Matts will not grow out! Cut them out or, if you don't feel able, get the vet to do it. How 'regular' is regular? It should be every day, Mr Boris - don't you comb your hair every day?

No they dont grow out - they just get worse. Try brushing them out or cutting them out and wait for the hair to grow back.
