Bobby Troup wrote the song, and Nat King Cole recorded it, in 1946. The title was suggested by his wife, Cynthia Troup.

If you remember the TV show "Emergency!", Bobby Troup played Dr. Joe Early. Emergency! was produced by Jack Webb (Dragnet), and at that point Jack Webb had divorced Julie London and Bobby Troup had married her. (I guess that's one way to avoid alimony.)

Bobby Troup also played Gene Krupa in "The Tommy Dorsey Story".

The song was one of the first recorded by the Rolling Stones.

The Corvette that starred in the TV show wasn't introduced until the mid-1950s. The song had been popular for almost a decade at that point.

Route 66 (now Highway 13)

(Word & Lyrics by Bobby Troup in 1946)

This lyrics are like performed by Natalie Cole

If you ever plan to motor west,
travel my way, take the highway that is best.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

It winds from Chicago to LA,
more than two thousand miles all the way.
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

Now you go through Saint Looey
Joplin, Missouri,
and Oklahoma City is mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo,
Gallup, New Mexico,
Flagstaff, Arizona.
Don't forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino.

Won't you get hip to this timely tip:
when you make that California trip
Get your kicks on Route sixty-six.

You might find the answer if you look up the TV show with that name. It starred Martin Milner.
