Because..the vicar was usually drinking something stronger in his tea cup, but no one would be so forward to offer a vicar some liqour in front of others..

Seems so , as it is a show of appreciation that the tea was delicious ,well that's what I'm told as in Afternoon high tea and cream,jam,& scones.at the vicarage...LOL ♥

I am an American, and I find that quite humorous! I can just see people sitting around having tea and scones and being very proper and someone let's one rip! ha haha. Love it!
