Both. You need the knowledge and wisdom to know which to break and which to follow. The one to follow is the scientific method. The ones to break are the ones based simply on popular tradition rather than honest evaluation of evidence. They didn't notice the curvature of the earth since it isn't strikingly obvious from casual observation. But they had no scientific basis to rule out curvature of the earth. Believing God created the universe doesn't mean you need to rule out the possibility of evolution. When science can't find evidence of how life, or even the universe, came into existence, it can't rule out creation by God. The parallels are striking!
