First check that your brake pad isn't worn grinding on the disc.

Then check joints and bearings.

Usually intermittent grinding like you describe would be that the brakes are already worn to the point that the brake rotor is ALREADY being chewed up at least some, by having the metal for the brake pad making contact with the brake rotor after one of the brake pads have already completely worn away.
If it were the wheel bearings as some suggest, it would not be an intermittent grinding. It would be constant, and continue to get worse until the bearings were replaced. And if it were the CV axle, you normally do not hear grinding, but will feel it in the steering wheel, and/or usually hear a clicking noise when you are going slow around corners, while traveling either forward or reverse.
So I would bet on the brake pads needing replacement, and likely the one rotor also. Many people say you need to replace both brake rotors at the same time. But if the one is really not worn, while the other one is, it really is not necessary. But I am sure some people would argue that point. Bottom line, if money is an issue, and the other rotor is not torn up at all, you likely will not need to replace the second rotor needlessly. But if money is not an issue, and you would rather just replace both, so that you know you are good to go, that will give you peace of mind rather than wondering whether to replace one or both. I hope this helps you.

I've looked at the five answers so far and possibly concur, but, check that you havn't got a small stone caught between your brake pad and disc.

sounds like either your wheel is rubbing on the arch (have you hit it or gone up a curb) or your have grit etc on the brake pads or even both problems
