This could be a torn cartilage under the Bursa(kneecap) an orthopedic surgeon can take X-Rays to see what's going on, or your family doctor, then one of them will take MRI's and then the orthopedic surgeon will put you to sleep and do an arthroscope, they put in a small camera on the end of a needle and check out the inside of your knee, they'll do whatever work is necessary while in there. You'll only have several small holes that take about three stitches each. You'd be on crutches for several weeks.
There's very little to no pain.

The knee cap has little to do with the knee joint, infact it helps to protect the joint. Is the pain directly behind the knee cap or does the cap itself hurt (like it was bruised or something)?
