No I'd only consider you a alcoholic if you drank non stop from the time you got home till the time you went to bed every day.

You would really only be considered an alcoholic if you HAD to have the beer. If you can't not drink, you would fall into that category. If you just "enjoy a couple of beers" when you are having a B-B-Q, and COULD leave the beer alone, no big deal. It's when you have to have the drink that it becomes an issue. Then it starts to change your life and affects the people around you and your job.

If you are worried about it, talk to your doctor, openly. The fact that you are even worried about it tells me you have no reason to worry. I have 4 brothers, and 3 of them are alcoholics. Two are "Functional" alcoholics and the other is just an alcoholic who will likely end badly.

I think from what you describe that no way are you an alcoholic. The media and all the "doctors" on TV and print want us to believe that if we drink at all we have a "problem".

I find it is a good way to relax after work. I have two beers, usually outside in my yard watching the birds and the kids in other yards. I find this very relaxing.

I also like to drink when I BBQ. I think this like a lot of things is merely habit. Pull out the grill and a beer goes with it. I don't need it, but after 30 years of doing so, it is just habit. And a habit does not make you an acoholic. Today's society (at least in the US) is just so Christian moralistic that they are trying to get us to believe if we do anything more than read the bible we need to go to meetings to get over bad habits because we are sick. Remember our parents. They drank more than we tend to and for the most part they were fine. Some were alcoholics, but most just enjoyed the martini.

If you drink three or more alcoholic drinks a day (one beer = a alcoholic drink) then you probably have a problem. You can be just as big a drunk on beer as you can on whiskey.
Don't let anyone tell you that you can't be a drunk if you just drink beer because it's a LIE.
You need to check out "Alcoholism" on the Internet or ask your doctor. People who tell you that you have to be drunk all the time in order to an alcoholic don't know what they are talking about. My husband was sober all day at work but when he came home he drank all evening. There are drunks who go for long periods of time completely sober and then go on binges. Some people are only weekend drunks.
You are asking this question for a reason. Find out the truth so you can keep yourself from going the way my husband did--to his grave.

Probably not an alcoholic as long as you are eating too.
Some people just keep drinking the beers and don't eat that is where the problem starts.

A couple of beers a day after a hard day's work is a well deserved reward for any bloke and nothing goes better at a bbq steak than a cold beer. Move to Australia mate and you will fit right in! Forget the wowser attitudes of the other responses!

Can you skip them without feeling deprived?

Has drinking affected any of the main parts of your life, work, family, money, spiritual life, self esteem etc?

Has anyone told you that your personality changes when you drink?

Has anyone in your family or friends asked you to stop drinking?

Is it really a "couple" of beers or are we talking six packs?

It sounds like you question whether you are or not or you wouldn't be asking the question. Check out AA online and see what you relate to or don't relate to.
Or, look them up in the phone book and check out a meeting. Lots of information there to help you decide.

Archie is 100% right. Enjoy your brews man! A couple will do you no harm. If your doctor tells you to quit for some reason then do it. But meanwhile drink up and enjoy! Study after study has shown that people who drink moderately are actually healthier than teatotalers. What are you feeling guilty about. BTW I seldom imbibe myself. But if you like it why deprive yourself?

If you drink to get drunk, then yes, you are an alcoholic, but why else would you drink?! I think we are all alcoholics on the inside.
