I have 4 guns, 1 is an ak74 variant, semi auto, 5.45 x39mm 30 rd magazine.

-another is a kel tec 9mm carbine w/ laser sight and 30rd magazine

i have 2 shotguns, 1 remington 870 express 12 gauge, and a mossberg tactical 12 gauge, both pump action

For the shotguns I'd have the 1st round buckshot, 2nd buckshot, 3rd slug, 4th buckshot, 5th buckshot, and 6th a slug

Which one of these would you grab first for home defense. Say a person enters the home, which would you want to grab to knock that guy down, with the objective of killing him. Do not worry about home damage in your responses.

I bet that's the mossberg 500 isn't it ; )

I have alot of guns, but the one that stays hanging on the wall above my bed is the Mossberg 500 tactical shotgun. Why do you think that is the gun police use.

Sometimes it can be hard to shoot a handgun in the dark without a light source. Dont put a flashlight on the shotgun, that gives away your position. You know you home better than any criminal will so keep the lights out. With a shotgun just point it in the direction of the intruder and pull the trigger.

I would use the Moss berg over the Remington for several reasons. The moss berg has a shorter barrel so it is more easy to maneuver in tight spaces. The mossberg will also have a much wider spread much faster than the Remington.

Your 9mm is a carry gun, not the best for home protection.

You AK is for when anarchy comes to town and you need a high capacity mag lol

I'd go with the 870 then the mossberg. The stars aligned when remington made the 870. It is probably the best pump in the world not the best for the money but just plain the best.

I would use #2 or 00buck. This using bird shot is something i've heard recently. I don't know much about it but to me it is just as good as 00 for some scenarios and worse in others (assuming you live alone).

If you have had any tactical training you know that the risk of lawsuits is high (though some state legislatures are reducing it check for castle laws), also you really do not want to kill anyone. When you rack the pump on a shotgun everyone knows what that is and the guy is probably going to run out of the house.

In prison there are alot of guys who have been shot. Thieves often think they can survive a gun shot. That belief is diminished if the muzzle is big.

The deposit of energy in a 12 guage is much better. You may give one guy a deadly wound with a 357 and he still kills you. The guy may even survive a 00 blast but you probably knocked him down.

Shotguns are designed to point where you look. You might have to add some shims to get this just right.

"hunting" people is a bad idea. Doorways and hallways make good bottlenecks. Staying behind cover and focusing on the bottlenecks is better and more effective.

If you decide to ignore my earlier advice on "hunting" there are some really neat weapon retention techniques. Learn them

There is an old saying that goes something like:
"the only reason to have a handgun is to shoot your way to a long gun". While I think this is simplistic there are alot of good reasons for this saying.

To the person quoting the AMA stat. I want you first to exactly imagine what that stat means then do some more research and tell me if you don't feel lied to.

Doctors are not trained for this type of research. I think it is a a shame that philosophy courses and social science courses no longer teach causation versus correlation, reverse causation, begging the question, post hoc fallacy etc.

There are different scenarios. For example, if you are awaken by an intruder in your bedroom, a pistol under the pillow will give you quicker access.

If you are awaken, but the intruder is in another part of the house, a shotgun and house phone is your best bet. The house phone gives you location when dialing 911.

If you are not having to protect other family members in the house, I do not recommend searching for the intruder(s). Unless you are trained and experienced, house clearing can get you into a gunfight. The bad guy doesn't always lose.

If the person is at the front door and is threatening to come in, then the shotgun and house phone is the best defense. Laws differ in different states, so you may not be able to shoot the person until they are in your house. Hence, the phone is a good weapon.

I would load the shot gun with #6 shot for the first round. At close range, the round is very deadly. After that, I alternate the rounds with buckshot and slugs. Someone coming thru the door may be on drugs. You may have to destroy the body to stop the person.

Two points for others reading these answers. It is a proven fact, but not reported by our liberal media, that gun ownership and gun carrying people reduce crime. Law enforcement can not always respond quickly to a call.

The second point is to avoid trouble. Be alert to your surroundings and do not get caught by surprise. Just because you may have a gun with you does not mean you will win the fight. When bullets start flying, others, including yourself, may be hit.

A third point. If you have to shoot someone, you need to understand there will be an investigation. Know you local laws. What you may believe is self defense may not be. You may be charged with a crime.

I'm sorry, but I have another point. Education/training/practice are necessary. Civilians have only a 10% ratio of hitting their targets during encounters. Law enforcement is about 20%.

Scattergun (shotgun) Hands down. The trajectory carries much more mass than both of the other rounds together. Either the 870 or the Moss would be fine as long as your comfortable shooting it. Most important would be which one your more familiar with because worst case scenario its going to be dark and your not going to be firing on all cylinders. While I question your choice of shell loadout on the shotguns, you cant go wrong with 00 Buck or hollowpoint slugs for home defense. Personally I load out with #4 because I don't want to pass through the walls and I doubt anyone with a facefull of shot will keep coming for more.

I'd grab the Mossberg first, of the guns you have. In my house I'd grab a revolver. To me a long gun is for room defense, not for searching a house. That barrel sticking through a doorway ahead of you gives an burglar something to grab, and it gets him inside your zone of fire.

I like your loading system for the pump gun, it is very similar to my own.

Ignore the advise about using birdshot inside the house. The pellets are too light for sufficient penetration. If there are other people in the house, or if you live in an apartment, you might want to use #1 Buckshot rather than 00 or 000 Buck. In any event', I'd not go smaller than #2 goose shot for the first round and continue with your buck and slug pattern for the rest of the magazine.

The AK is silly.
The nine is a good backup, but I'd rather have something with a bigger hole in the end.
The shotguns are fine, if you have time to change the load out. If you want two loads, I'd suggest your buckshot be #4 for your first two, 00 for the next. There's nothing that could happen inside your house that would call for you to want a slug. And the "too light for penetration" thing is not my experience. If you see short-range shotgun wounds, you know better.

I definitely agree with Jack.

The shotguns are your first choice, but you'd better have them handy.

More than likely you won't be wandering around the house with the shotgun or the rifle slung to your back.

During waking hours, you keep your pistol on you at all times. This way you have something at least until you can get to your shotguns.

Got your shotguns? Good to go. One point of note: Shooting at shadows without identifying your target is a bad idea. You need to know what you are shooting at. The last thing you want to do is accidentally shoot an innocent, like your wife / girlfriend / kids / fireman who is reporting your home is on fire!

Various tactics / debates and a very long discussion on low light engagements. But basically if you haven't confirmed its a bad guy and where the bad guy is, why would you shoot?

The AK74 is good in mob situations.

And like Jack said, practice practice practice. Practice hitting accurately. Practice shooting while moving. Practice reloading. Practice navigating your home, identifying blind spots and points of cover vs concealment.

One of the shotguns. They are easier to fire from the hip.I would suggest that you use #6s or a similar small shot size because at close range it will get the job done but you dont want to penetrate the walls and maybe hit someone outside or in another room. The slug is a good idea but remember if you shoot someone retreating you could be charged with a crime.

The one that is closest. In the scenario you've described, the tactical shotgun. Why not the Tec 9 w/laser sight? Because the laser will also give away your position and the .12 gauge is a better stopper than the .9mm even with the high cap mag. You might only get one shot off. Make it count.

A shotgun with #6 bird shot. If you are in your home the shot will be at close range and at close range an ounce of lead is an ounce of lead.

With birdshot you won't kill your neighbor.
