Being a non christian (I am aTibeton Buddhist) many Christians upon finding out about me have professed their desire to convert me.. I know that they mean well and many have backed off respectfully when I told them that I am not interested but often many have after I have told them that I am Buddhist look at me in puzzlement. Why do you think they feel puzzled at me?

Because they are Christians and Christianity to them is the only true religion, as such, everybody should be christian.

The bible has some context that states that all non believers will go to hell, which then to some people means they should promote the Christian beliefs. The promotion varies from person to person. Some Christians like to push their views/concepts into the faces of others, but others don't (Like myself). I used to be a "Super Christian," but through all of that time I never tried to impose my beliefs on anyone. I just knew many scriptures, and told people about the word of god in certain situations.
So I think the link is based off of that biblical stance. The bible states that damnation is due for the non-believers, and some people are set out to change some things. With good intentions and respetful ways I think that's fine, but some people really don't know the boundary of explanning a complex set of beliefs and concepts (With an attempt at swaying someone), and imposing the said beliefs/concepts.

Not all Christians necessarily want to convert people of another faith. But you are right, there are the evangelists who due to some obscure passage in the bible feel it is imperative that they preach the gospel to anyone they can get to stand still and listen to them for more than 30 seconds!
There are Christians who quitely believe and don't force their beliefs on others, and there are the latter who feel they are on so sort of mission from Jesus to spread their thoughts and beliefs on everyone else. I am a wiccan, I will listen patiently to them and smile. And then I tell them quietly, that spirituality is a very personal path and no one path is suitable for everyone.

I'm an Asatruar, and totally know where you're coming from.to answer your question: Because they are brainwashed to believe that "religion" is the "one true faith", and that all other religions are of their "devil". Their programming conditions them to believe that people need to hear the gospel so that they can be saved. They're so brainwashed they don't even realize that their "religion" is dying.

Miriam's, Jon's, and yaabro's answers prove me right.

If you lived in Wyoming and told me you were buddhist, I would look puzzled at you too. Its simply not a common religion here and I would probably ask you how to came to be one in Wyoming.

Many people assume you are not happy in your religion, and that God has some big reward because they get you to change your religion also. But the Bible even speaks to these people to remove the mote or beam from you own eye before you try and help your brother remove his splinter.
I personally know how to deal with many religions but I must admit I am not familiar with yours being raised in California has not exposed me to many of your beliefs.
I like passive religions and I assume yours is one, but most Americans are more aggressive to acept a passive one, especially ones they do not understand. Also you must understand there is a Bible verse that says go make disciples of ALL creatures; Mathew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe;

because they believe that their religion is right
and they find it weird that people actually want to be buddist

i think it's awesome that you are a Tibetan Buddhist though
and if i had to pick a religion.. it would be buddism

because it's about wisdom, peace, and they don't try to convert people or rape little boys (such a priest tend to do)

That's the whole point, dear. Christians needn't convert other Christians to faith in Christ.

Because it would be silly to try and convert those who already trust Christ as their Savior. We are to share the good news with unbelievers, to bring them to faith in Jesus Christ.
