There is a man in my hometown raising Dobermans in his back kennels who says he wants the Police Department in town to switch from using German Shepherds to these kinds of dogs... Do you think it is exceptionally cruel to use a dog like this? Will it help the crime rate go down?

I think they will not use "Dobies" for the same reason Rottweilers will not be used. They are very willful and hard to train. Not saying they are not wonderful creatures, and loyal friends. They are not as flexible as German Shepherds are.

I raised both Dobermans and Rottweilers. They make great family dogs, and guard dogs. They are not as submissive. I think that's what makes them so interesting though. Once they lock down on the person/thing they want to bite, they will not so easily let go. That makes them undesirable for police work. When a GS is commanded to stop, they stop. When a DB, or Rot is told to stop, they just look like "hold on....I'm not finished yet!"

The German Shephard Dog (GSD) is used more than the Doberman for ONE simple reason.

They are easier to train -- not because they are MORE intelligent than a Doberman, but simply less willful.

However, I'd go for a Doberman for protection any day over a GSD. Police Officers have told me the Dobe tends to hold, then shred skin slighly upon the release command -- meaning they get in that last "So There!"

That makes them more cunning -- IMHO.

I cant see it making much difference at all or even the police switching to them unless he like ownes the town I doubt he can make them do it, but beyond that whil dobermans are good gaurd dogs their life span is shorter than the average german sheppard and their tracking abilities are not as good as sheppards, why do you think the german sheppards are the dogs of choice not just because they look mean they are more functional and easier to train for police work.

German Shepherds are primarily used because of their superior overall qualities over the Dobermans.

Doberman have too many Germanic features - the Police would not like them.
