As for "WHY" Chinese "wine" is not "famous" in the world market, why should it be? The Chinese claim it's the best wine in the world, but who cares what they claim? The Chinese like to eat dog meat, so should we give up beef and eat Fido? The Chinese also eat rats. Care to try some fried rodent tails? Cannibalism is not as widespread as it once was, but some cultures still appreciate a true "prime" rib.

Why is the odor of Chinese "wine" so strong? Maybe it's because the stuff is not diluted with lots of water. Maybe it's the rat poison the Chinese use to keep their rodents from eating their rice.

In many primitive cultures the people eat grubs. Does that mean we should eat them, too?

The French are famous for, among other things, escargot (snails). Want to try some? The Italians eat pizza as an appetizer, not a main course. Should we buy pizza by the ounce rather than by the pound?

Different cultures have different tastes in food and beverages. The Aztecs of Mexico used to sacrifice humans to their gods. They cut out and ate their victims' hearts. Too bad they didn't have any Chinese "wine" to wash the hearts down with.

The "Rice Wine" you call it, or "Bi Jio" as it's known in Chinese, is not a wine, but a liquor and should be called as such (40%+ alcohol content), or spirit. I don't know how else to say it in English, other than calling it Bijio.

It makes sense that Chinese liquor is distilled rice. It seems to be popular in China in the winter for the same reason vodka is popular in Russia - it keeps you warm in cold weather. It's even more popular in the bitterly cold north. However, vodka not only had the advantage of a much earlier introduction to foreign markets, it's an incredibly mixable spirit.

Bijio has a horrible taste and odor to foreigners, and it's virtually unmixable. Western taste in spirits comes from mixing them, and even liquors like Tequila can be mixed into Margaritas, whereas Bijio is rarely mixed at all. Foreigners don't drink much booze straight, other than whiskey, and we never drink it heated as many Chinese guys do with Bijio.
