A 2003 Taurus is a VERY reliable car. Especially if it has the smoother shifting AX4N transaxle that 2002 and newer models have. Either 3.0L, whether it's the Duratec or Vulcan are reliable powerplants that provide more than adequate performance for the type of car that it is. From 2000 onward, Ford has worked out just about ALL the bugs out of these cars. Funny thing is, for 2008, Ford has renamed to Five Hundred the TAURUS, in hopes of boosting the slow sales of this model during its introduction in 2004. Disregard the typical Ford bashing comments you get from some of the users here. Hey Yugie, it's good to see you here again after 6 months. Hope

RE:
2003 Ford Taurus reliable?
I own a 2003 Ford Taurus and it has 106k miles on it, and it drives PERFECTLY and has a very smooth ride. However, I know that these cars have a history of bad transmissions and engines, and even some reliability issues. A lot of people I know still tell me that even though my taurus is newer, it...

You taurus is very reliable. The 2003 model does not have the transmission problems that earlier taurus' had, and the 3.0 liter 12 valve or "vulcan" engine is the most dependable V6 Ford made in my opinion. I never see a major engine concern with the 3.0 liter, except for a rare occasion of a broken valve spring and defective IAC valves, which are easy repairs. You will get very good service from your Taurus.

Provided that the car is regularly maintained it should go on indefinately. Obviously Mer is GM person and the first thing that come out of his/her empty head is found on the road dead......a typical Chevy attitude.
Well I have had all makes over the last 45 years and I can you my Fords stood up the best....and one I have had for 40 years.
If you maintain a car and change the fluids regularly you should get many more years service out of them, this includes flushing out the transmission every 7,000 to 10,000 miles and regular oil changes every 5,000 miles.
Maintainence is the operative word to any make of car. I have a 95 Lincoln MK 8 with 200,000+ miles on it and it has not been touched but it has been properly maintained. It is still beautiful.
My 64 Thunderbird has about 400,000 miles and likewise maintained properly. So don't believe those anti Ford nay sayers just maintain it and it will serve you well.

I actualy own 2003 Ford Taurus SEL. No problems till 125,000 miles. Car has been maintained well but needed new fuel pump at 125,000 miles ($800) and new oil pan gasket ($350) at 130,000 miles. Currently (at 135,000 miles) I am getting slight transmission shudder when going to overdrive, AC started acting up and CD player broke. Car is still driveable but not sure how long it is going to last.

the two prevous people answered this question correctly for you, according to consumer reports the 03 taurus is reliable and had no problems with its engine or transmission. The person that spoke poorly of it was obviously giving yet another opinion based answer with no factual basis to it what so ever. This seems to be the trend of the GM fans because they seem to struggle to find any factual info that puts gm ahead of ford so they do what they can with iformation that has no research.

We had a 86, Gave it to my daughter, she sold it to a family friend. The last I heard, it had 225K miles on it. No one has been inside the engine since new. It has had regular maintenance performed on it. So it is pretty reliable.
