It's scientifically untrue. It tells of more immorality than any book I can think of. (No, really. Fit in that much genocide, rape, murder and torment into another novel...)

Why's it good?

John D- If you look back on and ... respond. Ahem.

RAPE in the bible? Please. Do you read it? Lot offers his daughters up for rape, the mideonite women are "used" by the tribe of Israel.

Moses did it in "time of war" WHAT? Do you have ANY historical context? He was marching thru tribal lands and utterly destroyed the people. The Cananites (whom he wiped out) were his in-laws! They weren't attacking him! The 42 kids that god sent a bear to "tear up" - weren't at war.

Read your book.

Then get back with me.

*sitting having a drink with lappy*

You know lappy, I find it interesting that alot of people focus on sex and violence in the bible. I've been really interested reading these responses and others from both believers and non believers.

I think we can all agree that the bible is the top selling "book" of all time, and that it is an historical document covering thousands of years of turmoil and strife.

That being said, if the point of it is to learn from the past, doesn't it seem (from a spiritual perspective) that the bible in its entirety leads up to the "good news" of a way OUT of the mess that we've gotten ourselves into? If it's read from an "un-spiritulal", "faithless", or "1st time" perspective, does the focus seems to be on the negative?

To me, that is a huge spiritual wake up call. If the bible is truly a tool for us to use to "seek God" and "salvation", then that makes it all the more important to study it further. As people, (and admittedly I would add "born into a sinful world and sinful in our own hearts") shouldn't we be striving to overcome the negative experiences in our lives and learn from other's negative experiences? In that respect, I suppose it's a book that I wouldn't want to put down! It's a good read and I want to know the ending....

Wow this is a deeper subject than I could possibly have imagined.

As for the science, again, since believers accept that Jesus is the author of all things, then doesn't it follow that the science of the bible is true, and completely fits into the "real" science of today? I say "real" in the context of what we see, hear, taste, smell, and feel in the here and now as well as speculating on evidences uncovered from the past.

wow this is going to be a long conversation.... yes please, I'll have another cooler.....

blessings ((((laptop)))) :)

That's not true at all. The Council of Nicea determined the Nicean Creed and declared Aranism a heresy. The settlement of the biblical canon for the Catholic Church was still a century off. However, it is true that Eusibius, Constantine's biographer and early Church historian, first began circulating a list of what he considered to be inspired texts versus what he thought were not while the bishops were gathered for the council. Other bishops started circulating their own lists, and the debate raged, but by the time of St. Jerome, and his translation of scriptures into the Latin Vulgate bible in the early fifth century, the debate was pretty well settled. While it's not as silly as tossing scripture into the air, it's not exactly an exalted, holy spirit ordained process either.

The Bible is entirely accurate on all subjects it touches, including science. This has been proved over and over and over and over again -ad infinitum. The Bible also lets us see exactly how ugly sin is by allowing us to see His creatures in action.
Today's society is not only no different than biblical times, it's much worse -as the Bible prophecies. How do you like seeing what we all really look like in God's eyes. It sure isn't pretty, is it?
We are supposed to learn from our mistakes -the mistakes of our ancestors- and this is why the Bible tells us about the mistakes of those individuals over the thousands of years which the Bible covers. So far, we haven't leaned anything. We never do
The Bible is Good because it was God-breathed, and thus inerrant and completely accurate in every subject it touches.
PS> The Bible never contradicts itself, the Dead Sea Scrolls proved the amazing accuracy in copying and translation from older manuscripts.
There are far more existing manuscripts to support the complete accuracy of the Bible than any other ancient document. 2nd place goes to Homer's Illiad, and it doesn't even get close to the Bible
Archaeology and every other true science has always supported the contents of the Bible and never disproved any of it
What a person might think are contradictions are usually due to ignorance of the times, the context and the customs -among other things. There may've even been some minor copying errors, but nothing even a little significant and certainly nothing that affects the Bible's doctrines. Same goes for any errors during translation, especially the King James Version because it is the most accurate and trustworthy English translation.
If a person studied the entire Bible close enough and long enough, and if that person took the time and energy to learn of the eras in which the Bible was written -including all beliefs and cultures etc of the peoples- then that same individual would soon see that there are no contradictions in the Bible. This only takes some work and research; not for the lazy, willingly ignorant type of person.
PS. It's a well known and documented fact that the original founders of true science were Bible believing Christians
PPS. I've read the entire Book, several times. I've studied it and searched for some answers to questions which U yourself have asked. Things which I thought were contradictions. I have found the answers I need, and so can any intelligent, searching human being.
If there was an international news event, would U expect every news item from every reporter to be exactly the same, or would U expect to find each reporters individual point of view of the news item???

It is not scientifically untrue. It is mankind mis-understandings of it.The truth is you do not understand it enough to base an opinion. Why has it been a source of contention and rewrites? Today, you can mirror some of the stories in today's societal values. It speaks about Sodom and Gomorrah because this place was full of filth much like today's' cities and the governments are caught up in their own stature rather than try to maintain moral decency. Refer to 2 Timothy 3:1-5., It also speaks of Sodomy-men who lie with men. There was destruction of these ungodly forces because they were wrong then and there are still wrong today. Look at the diseases that has come about because of particular life styles.

There is a good exposition of the Bible at this web site www.watchtower.org. Help yourself to good information.
It is a great book because you find strength when you read the account of Job. People overcame adversity. The Prodical son is a good story. Leviticus deal with heath matters and cleanliness. to avoid diseases.. Psalms is a song of praise. Certain sicknesses must be quarantine. Proverbs speaks to sons: Ephesian marriage and children. You can practically extrapulate what you want from it depending on your purpose.
WE are living in different times so do not expect much of what happened then to occur now (in Noah's time).
By the way the Churches preaches that when you die you go to heaven and become an angel. Has this been scientifically proven? This is one of the more difficult books to read and understand in one sitting. You cannot pick certain passages and think that that's the whole book either.

Some of the stories are extremely fascinating. You could call it a foundation to many other stories. What makes it unique, though, is the idea that not only is the human race extremely human, but there is a culpability and a responsibility, and we are not alone. It's about real people and real situations, told from a unique perspective.

I'm sure there are other books out there with just as much merit. Some of the "Lives of the Saints" are quite fascinating as well.

I guess it's a matter of taste. Some of the style is kind of strange as well, but there is a certain voice underlying the entire rendition that one can only describe as arrogant and loving. Two very opposite and definable traits that only a God can have.

The Bible is not a science book. It is a record of what has happened. God does not accept all the behavior recorded in the Bible. It tells us about human behavior and all kind of things that will take the place when we do not honor God.

The Bible is not a "feel good " book. It is inspired Word of God, written by chosen humans.

It is merely an opinion givin by who!?!?! The followers of this book of course. I do agree with you also, there are far too many contradictions, and scientificaly untrue things told in this book. Also, many traditions the Christians have today are old traditions from the Pagans... such as easter. Which is a Germanic celebration of the goddess Eostre.

Or my favorite hypethetical answer... "OH NO! JESUS IS COMING... HIDE THE EGGS!"

Peace
