I'm not pregnant or anything but wondered if, when I do get pregnant, if I would want to be told the sex of the child. From a practical point, it makes sense to find out the sex of the child so you can shop for things, decorate the nursery, etc. I've heard of many couples though that are told they are having a girl, for example, and so they go out and spend hundreds of dollars on girl themed things and then when the baby was born, it was a boy! Has this happened to many of you or your friends? I wonder if the percentage is high for this happening....

If you have an experienced sonographer doing your ultrasound and they get a clear view at 18-20 weeks, they should be able to tell. The woman who did mine was right, and she asked me to come back and tell her if she was wrong because it would be a first in her 8+ years experience!
Ultrasound imaging is pretty good these days and it just keeps getting better....

It would really depend on how well you trust the ultrasound tech (or doctor) and how educated he/she is. It's a lot less likely to be incorrect if you have more than one ultrasound as well.
With my first daughter I had two ultrasounds, they both said she was a girl and she was. This time I am 31 weeks pregnant and have been told I am having a girl again. I am very confident that this will be another girl because thus far we have had 5 ultrasounds (pregnancy complications) and one of which was a 4D ultrasound and I saw for myself with her legs spread wide open, there was no penis! So it really depends on each person's individual experience.
Sometimes you can truly count on the person's opinion on your babies sex and other times you can't. If you have an amniocentesis done you can know the sex for sure, but I wouldn't recomend just doing one for that reason alone. There should be a valid medical reason for having one done due to the elevated risk of miscarriage.

I think you have to go wth your gut instinct. All pregnancies are different, regardless of the sex. Now I haven't got any other children, but I just knew straight away I was having a boy. Sure enough, 20 week scan, and there he was! You have to follow your gut. J xx

This happened to my fiance. The doctor said that he was twin girls, and his grandmother said he was a big healthy boy. Well, it turned out to be a big healthy boy. His grandmother and the doctor argued before the delivery.

i was told with both of my sons that they were girls. i found out with my second child two days before the c-section that he was a boy...but that was back in the mid 90's before the super-techie ultrasounds came into play.
