I am using a hdmi cable connecting a Samsung DVD player with progressive on to a Hitachi 51" rear projection HDTV. Seems to be unclear, fuzzy, like there is snow in the background. Does the same thing with component cables. Does the disk need to be an HD-DVD to be clear. My 27" had a better picture. I used magic focus but it doesn't help.Any suggestions to improve picture. It it supposed to be 1080i but it looks like 480i. The tv is set to 1080i. Whats the deal.

The noise is probably in the picture. It is usually called 'film noise' . Lots of directors keep the noise there to give the DVD a more realistic, film-like, look.

In contrast, cartoons, since they are created digitally, usually have no such noise. So, I suggest to try watching a cartoon and see if the noise is still there.

A 27" is smaller than a 51" so things will definitely look sharper.
The more you increase the size of your display , the more you enhance noise and scaling artifacts. Remember to watch the 51" TV at about 10 ft away (vs 6 ft for the 27").

If the snow only comes up with playing DVDs (and not regular TV), it soulds like aplayer issue. You tried different cables, so it isn't the cables. And if the snow only comes up with DVDs, it shouldn't be the TV. You might have a defective DVD player. I'd try going to the set-up of the DVD player to make sure everything is set-up correctly. If that doesn't help, I'd look to contacting someone about looking at you player.
