The moon appears red because of an astronomical event known as a lunar eclipse.

Essentially, the moon looks bright because it reflects the light of the sun. Through its orbit, the earth casts a shadow in space as it is in front of the sun.

In a lunar eclipse, the earth is directly between the sun and the moon, so this shadow is cast over the moon itself, blocking the sun's light. Its a bit like this:
moon <--- earth <------------------ sun
o <--- 0 <------------------ O

You'd probably expect the moon to temporarily 'disappear' because its in darkness, matching the rest of space - indeed, sometimes it does - but more common is the red appearance it had.

Its because the red and orange light part of the spectrum are very good at penetrating the earth's atmosphere, which is a thick layer of gas. All colours are deflected or bent around the earth, but as reds and oranges have the longest wavelengths, they don't scatter as easily.

During this lunar eclipse, as the red and orange light is being sent around the earth and its atmosphere, it is projected onto the moon.

That's why it appears to be red: because of the lunar eclipse, not the end of the world coming.

LMAO!! This has got to be the funniest question I've come across. No, the world isn't gonna end - obviously you don't watch the moon much. It is often red when it first rises -- much like the sun in the early morn. Better pay those bills or there'll be late fees!!`

Nope.

After the last Indorneasian volcano explosion, here in Australia the Full Moons, Sunrises & Sunsets for the next 18 odd months was marelously red.

This is an astronomical phenomenon that happens about every 2.5 years. I've seen this several times and the world didn't end then and I don't think it will now.

maybe thats what the excitement is all about. Americans are in debt to their necks just waiting for Jesus to rescue them from bankruptcy. I dont think its a sign the moon does that occasionally.

Wanda the fish if you saw the moon change red. I think your pet owner needs to take you to the vet. You sound like you may have a really bad eye infection..
