Even the Urban Dictionary doesn't have an attribution to the author; however, the correct phrase is:

Comedian Richard Pryor was the first to 'coin' the phrase. There has been and still is a lot of variations since then.

The origin of that phrase is most probably lost as with so many other wise phrases. Nowadays it is being used by different groups to advertise coffee, stout, black leather, clothes etc. But by far the most common interpretation is with reference to black men as elucidated in the following article.
