I'm looking for software to do spreadsheets for billing, and one for text recognition for editing printed material.

Try NeoOffice. It's a free, open source alternative to MS Office, and is written for the Mac. It includes a word processor and spreadsheet which may meet your needs.

try openoffice.org. they may have what you're looking for. they do have great open soured spreadsheet program for linux.
