I'm so screwed. I'm leaving the country for 2 weeks, my flight is in 8 hours and the dog sitter just called to cancel 10 minutes ago because she's busy. There is absolutely no one that I can leave my dog with. I've called everyone I know and they're all unavailable. So my only choice is to leave my dog in my room for 2 weeks. A friend of mine will drop by every morning just to change his water and give him his food. My dog will only have human contact for about 10 mintues a day. It sucks, but I have no other choice. Do you guys think it's alright to leave my dog like that for 2 weeks? Do you have any other possible suggestions?

wow, i had no idea i would be attacked for asking this. I didn't mean to sound like an animal abuser or anything. I just couldn't think of what else to do. That's why I went on here, I wanted some other suggestions. I'm kinda offended by people calling me an ****** or assuming that I'm someone who doesn't treat animals well. Anyways...I'm gonna leave him with a friend and have them take my dog to a kennel. Thanks to those who had real suggestions and for letting me know in a kind way that I shouldn't leave my dog in my room.

Don't do that!! That's terrible! If you have enough money to leave the country than you have enough money to board your dog at a reputable place that will take care of play with your dog. If you can't secure someone to care for your pet you shouldn't go. It is horrible that you are even considering doing something like that to your dog. Your dog is your responsibility and it's welfare is much more important than your vacation. If you can't take care of your dog reasonably you need to give him up to a good home with people who are willing to take care of his needs all the time, not just when it is convenient.

I dont agree with the plan of you laing your dog alone in your room for two weeks? First of all if your friend is only stopping by to change the water and feed, thats great. But on the other hand it isnt as if your friend doesnt take the dog out to use the bathroom, then the food and water that has been given will have to be expressed, and where exactally will it go? Even if you have a litter box trained dog, I would really hate to smell your room when you got back?
Second of all, what if this friend decides they have better things to do than feed your dog? Then you would come home to a dead dog, and you would be totally responsible for that one.
Where do you live at? I will take the dog for two weeks if you are close enough. I would even charge you less than a dog kennel would as I really feel sorry that your pup might die if you leave him in that room. Dont worry about the human contact, think about his life.
Please call a kennel. No way would I leave my dog for even one night all alone. I would call my Mom and ask her to sit, and my Mom hates dogs.
Please dont do this to your pup.

Matt, all dogs are different. One of mine is laying on my lap as I write. He gets wigged out if I am late from work! My other one downstairs HAS to come to the shop every day with me or he sulks. Some dogs will start chewing, wetting, scratching at doors etc. Is your friend going to walk your dog? He's/she's gotta do it's business right? Why can't your friend take the dog to his place? Is he outdoors or indoors/
Have you tried a dog boarding place? I know you have to leave, but maybe your friend can help find a kennel and get the dog there.
Do whatever you can to make sure the dog doesn't get stressed by your absence. Without trying to sound condescending, that dog is your responsibility and depends on you. Ask yourself what you would think if you heard someone doing what you are proposing. Would you think it was a good idea? I'm not trying to be mean, I am trying to have you look at it from another prospective. Good luck

You have another choice...you need to put the dog in a kennel. I can't believe you even asked that question...a dog in a room for two weeks being let out once a day? And I would rip that dog sitter a new one...too busy 8 hours before you leave? Either kennel the dog or contact the SPCA.

A kennel is worse than the first idea, dear.
kennels are not a place I would ever leave my pets. I would suggest you leave him home, with the friend who will feed him. And ask him/her to ask your friends and family while your away to stop by as much as they can.
People on here attack others a lot, don't let it bother you. People only take offense with others when they know they are not perfect themselves, hmm?
A kennel is a bad idea, it truly is, at least at your home, your dog will have familiar things around. As for that dog sitter, I would spread the word she is untrustworthy...this is not a good situation, and very unprofessional of her.
I hope this helps you.

I don't think that that's a good idea. Where do you live? There must be someone that could help you. Your dog needs to go out and do his business (#1 & #2) and being in your room for 2 weeks is not going to work. Call a kennel or dog boarder in your area and take your dog there. Or, take your dog with you as you travel. Or, post on Craigslist for a dog sitter. Or, have your dog sitter, who canceled on you, find a replacement for them. [Because they canceled on you, they have breached their agreement to watch your dog and they should have to pay for the cost of dog sitting (beyond what you would have had to pay them).] Ask a neighbor, a co-worker, a classmate, a friend to help. If they can't do it for the entire time that you are gone, split your time between a handful of people. Good luck!

Although not an ideal solution yur friend should do the trick. Make sure that the dog has fresh food and water every day but I am concerned about this animal being let out to go to the bathroom. Maybe you can leave cash and the shot records and have your friend get your dog into a boarding facility. That would be better. To leave an animal sitting in their own waste with lack of food and water as well as companionship is cruel and I believe it is illegal.

I don't think you're an abusive owner. You're just trying to work with what you have. I recommend either leaving the dog with a friend or putting it in a kennel. It needs more than 10 minutes of interaction a day. It will go crazy. Wouldn't you? The kennel may be costly but it's what you have to do.

How will the dog go the bathroom? You need to try and come up with something better. This dog sitter had no right to cancel on you at the last minute- tell me she isn't a professional?
Go on Craigslist for your area under pets and ask the community for help and suggestions. These are pet lovers who frequent the pets section. There may be someone who can offer a solution in time for you to make your flight. The ad is free! Hurry!

You can't leave your dog alone for 2 weeks, that would be cruel.
Please get someone to take him to be boarded at a licensed kennel. That way the dog is safe, you don't have to worry about him and he will be taken care of.
Calm down, get him to a kennel for those 2 weeks, do not leave him in your room.
