there's no reason to stop eating just becaue it's a certain time of the day. not eating after "x" pm is one of many incorrect pieces of information that is consistantly spread for those attempted to manage the weight. it's not what time you eat but what you are eating and how much. if the food that you consume at night is within your caloric intake for the day it will not have an adverse effect on weight loss but can actually increase it. the body needs nutrients every 3-4 hours in order for it to function at optimum levels of effeciency.

after dinner a healthy snack would be something like low fat cottage cheese or some other type of protein based food

there are no hard and fast rules it depends what suits you and how substantial your last meal was and your weight problems and there is not much as enjoyable as a mid night snack when you can't sleep. However I have been advised by the lecturer on a diet course not to eat any more after your last meal at night so there goes my mid night snack. You can have a drink though --not high calorie-- water or low fat milk would be good. You are also allowed to break the rule ocassionally but not often OK

There's no specific time really. That rule is made, because if you take in calories right before you sleep, you don't really get the chance to burn them, and therefore you develop fat. So, basically, if you want to hold to that, you should eat probably a good two hours before sleeping ;).
