I plan to drive a carpool of a bunch of people on July 4th in my SUV. Is it illegal to let people ride in the back cargo area of my truck, where there aren't seatbelts? It is a closed area (not an open bed like a pickup) and the other passengers would be seatbelted, as well as myself. But is it legally wrong to let some of my friends ride in the very back?
Thanks :-D

It's a violation of the seat belt law and others. It's been against the law in most states for years.

In spite of my impression, here is the law
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/director_staff/public_information/seatbelt.htm
and apparently only front passengers are required to wear them. It doesn't seem to say that 2nd seat passengers with seat belts must wear them.
I would suggest you print it out, read it carefully and keep a copy with you.
