My dog is a pomeranian and his nails are curling back into his paws. Can I save some money and use my own clippers? He is a small dog and I know how to avoid the quick of the nail.

No, if you try to clip his nails purchase a dog nail clipper. A human nail clipper can chip and fracture the nail, this can lead to deformation of the nail and/or infection in the nail bed. You can get a pair of clippers at a pet store for five dollars.

You cannot use human nail clippers on a dog!

The reason being, our nails are flat, that's why our nail clippers are also flat. Dogs' nails are round which require special clippers for them that are also rounded. You can buy them at any pet store or any store that sells pet supplies. They aren't that expensive, maybe around $5-$10 at the most.

If you try to use human nail clippers on your dog, you risk hurting him, no matter how careful you are.

And depending on how bad his nails are right now, you probably should have your vet clip the nails, and show you how to do it safely, then you need to buy yourself some nail trimmers so you can do the grooming yourself.

To keep your dog's nails short, walk him regularly. The pavement will help "file" his nails to a comfortable length.

I would advise against this. Personal nail clippers are designed for human nails, because they're basically flat.

You can get special clippers for your dog at any pet store for a reasonable price, probably around $10.

Go out to your local grooming store and pick up dog nail clipper but if the toe nails are that bad it is better to let your vet take care of the toe nails

Well you could but don't cut too short because they will bleed. However it would be better to get real dog clippers or get a groomer to do that. Sometimes it hurts them. However I did it to my puppy the other day because they aren't very thick or hard yet. So you could but it would be better if you used dog clippers or get a professional dog groomer to do it for you.

If you can, with out hurting him ... give it a try... just don't cut too short that they start to bleed. There are regular dog nail clippers. & you can also take them to a groomer... if that's all they're doing, they may only charge like $5.

Hmmm...I wouldn't because human nails are thin and dog nails are circular. I would use dog clippers just to be safe, but I really don't know if it would work.
