He still does not lift his leg to go pee. I tried bringing him to a tree to see if that would help but it doesnt. He has been around older dogs too, that lift their legs Im just not sure. Should I be worried about this? Is it normal?

I have a 5 year old male German Shepherd that just within the last year started to lift his leg to go pee. While it looked rather strange for him not to lift his leg, he was normal in all other ways. My advise - don't worry about it. As long as he doesn't have any medical problems - whats the big deal??????

As long as he's peeing normally (not significantly more or less frequently than usual) then there's nothing to worry about. Leg lifting is a learned behavior and some dogs just never pick it up. My 1 1/2 year old male German shepherd sort of lifts one leg while he's peeing, but it isn't really a leg hike (he only lifts it about two or three inches) and only does it about half of the time.

How early was he fixed? Many dogs don't lift there legs until they are older. Mine didn't try until he was 18 months and even then he couldn't do it. He would just pee on himself or fall over and pee on himself, klutz.

Instead he would pull branches down and pee on them, letting them go would spray pee every where. Needless to say I stayed far away.

He was about 30 months before he mastered it and he doesn't do it that often. Oh well.

Do you really want him to start lifting his leg on objects? Sounds like a blessing in disguise to me... I would not be worried at all, and it's perfectly normal for him not to lift his leg. Be happy, now you hopefully won't have to worry about him peeing on things he shouldn't.

My male GSD doesn't lift his leg either.. He was also neutered at 4 months of age so I figured it was in some way related to that.. I don't think it's anything to worry about though.. A lot of male dogs start lifting their leg when they begin "marking" their territory..
