If it is a redundant socket (PCI slot or graphics slot but w/ integrated graphics), PC will still work. If NOT, probably it could be repaired, but PC could end up being unreliable or unstable.

Depends on how the socket is broken and what
was supposed to go in it.

Many motherboards have sockets that contain
nothing (they're for expansion). Some breaks in
them won't cause any problem at all.

However, bent pins can cause major headaches
and yes, people have ended up replacing entire
motherboards because of such problems.

If you computer still works with the broken socket fine but i would not trust it and if get some one to fix it it might cost an arm an a lag where you can buy a Pentium d CPU 3.2Ghz for $145.00 and the motherboard for $84.00 it's just not worth the Hassle. and besides other things can go wrong .
