you need to strengthen your core muscles as this is the cause of your lower back pain. when the muscles of the inner/outer thigh and hips are weak muscles of the lower back are called upon to perform the movement of shortening the abdominals.

It's hard to imagine it hurting your tail bone doing crunches... people hurt their lower back usually because they have week abs and their back tries to take up the work.. if you know your abs are hurting .. better to stop and rest them than risk a lower back injury.

As for your tail bone doing sit ups... if you do them on a cushioned inclined bench this should surely solve it.

One more thing.. hold your tongue on the roof of your mouth.. it helps prevent neck strain... and keep your hands near your ears .. not behind your head.

It hurts your back becuase your back muscles are having to compensate for the abs. As for your tail bone try tilting your pelvis as you crunch up and only do small crunches.
Alternatively try this:

lying on your back cross your ankles with your knees bent and lift your feet off the ground so that your legs are at a 90 degree angle to your torso. Cross your arms accross your chest and then crunch up so the your elbows touch your legs.
