We have a warped idea of Tolerance today. At one point, tolerance meant that you RESPECTED what others believed, but you could still believe that they were wrong. Now, Tolerance has been warped to mean that we have to accept other view points as equally valid as our own.
I reject this tolerance out of hand.
Sadly, many "christians" today do not.
The belief in Absolute Truth is a basis of faith. If anyone claims to be a Christian, they agree (or should) that Jesus is the way, the truth and the light and that NONE come to the Father, except through Him.
To accept that other beliefs are valid as well, and that truth is relative, is to negate your own faith.
I say be respectful, be kind, be loving, but do NOT be this NEW form of "tolerant"

You are so right. I respect other's free will to choose for themselves what they want to believe and do in this life, but I am not tolerant of anything that goes against The Word of God. We are to be bold for Christ and this I'm afraid is not too prevelant today, unfortunatley. Even some christian churches shy away from preaching BOTH the hope and the warnings. There are too many candy preachers that are more concerned about filling the pews of their churches, then filling the souls with the whole truth of The Lord. Tolerance seems to be on the rise, but I doubt if The Lord will be very tolerant of this new tolerance. One of the people of the Old Testament that I cannot wait to meet in Heaven is John The Baptist who was a bold preacher for The Lord. It is very refreshing to see people like you on this forum. May God bless you.

Yes, I am tolerant. Our very survival as a species depends upon it. I have said it before and I will say it again--it is just this kind of thinking that is directly responsible for tragedies such as 9/11. I am not saying that Christians in this Country would ever do anything like that--I AM saying that the fundamental belief / intolerance is the same. This belief that your way is the ONLY way is dangerous, that has been proven through out the ages! Hundreds of thousands have died at the hands of people who believe that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Please reread your question and think about what you are saying....please! To reject tolerance is an ignorant and dangerous thing!

I am tolerant in the respect of the "old school" way of thinking - you respectfully disagree and are polite about it.
I get rapidly INtolerant when people insist I must make their POV as valid as mine in my life, when it clearly isn't. Or that my version of "the TRUTH" (it must be in all caps, you know) is totally invalid, that I'm an idiot and worse - then my tolerance flies out the window.

You can be tolerant of others' beliefs and even if you think they are wrong. The same as they can be tolerant of your beliefs even though they think you are wrong.
I went to parochial school for twelve years. The way they explained it to me is that some people have received the WORD. These are the Christians that have accepted Christ as their savior. There are others who have not received the WORD. They are people brought up in other religions. We do not know if they are saved or not for it is not for us to judge. We assume they will be judged on their merits and treated accordingly.
Then there are the people who have received the WORD, in other words have accepted Christ as their savior but then rejected Him. We were taught that these people were not going to be saved. So, it was better to have never received the WORD than to receive it and reject it.
So, if you got the WORD and live accordingly, you are in. If you have not received the WORD you may or may not be in and if you received but rejected the WORD you are definitely out.

I agree that many have gone beyond seeking tolerance and instead seek a cheering section. If they fail to get that, then the name calling begins. I do not have to give hardy approval to those who are breaking the laws set forth in the bible. If someone refuses to hear, my job is to still let my life be my good testimony, but it may be time to shake the dust from my feet.

Tolerance dose not, nor should ever mean the same thing as acceptance. General tolerance is a usually a good idea. Universal acceptance is pure foolishness.

I love accountability! Thank you so much for showing me time and again that Jesus truly IS the way, the truth and the light!! No other can be Him! The end will show them that, but sadly it will be too late. Yes, we must be loving and tell them aka warn them what is REAL truth, but if they do not listen - we dust our feet and walk away aka do NOT accept this new form of 'tolerant'!! Good one! God Bless!

Then why are Christians always asking us to 'Respect' their faith. Actually I would tolerate it, the mild variety at least but never respect it. and the seond comment really just sums it up.

I'm a Christian and I respectfully disagree. To affirm Jesus Christ as the way to God for me, does not negate the validity of other faiths, and vice versa. "All truth is God's truth."
