I had just turned 46, and it was in a 71 Cessna 150L.
And the main thing I will always remember deals with weight and balance. My instructor weighed a little over 200, so when I went to take off, I felt like I jumped off the runway. And, I had to constantly hold right aileron, due to the unblanced weight load down the center axis....

My first official solo was at age 17 in a Cessna 150. It was on a Sunday morning. The wind was so calm that you could smell the dead skunk on the road passing the approach end of the runway. My first unofficial solo was at 14 in an Aeronca Chief.....the wind lifted me as I was taxiing back to the barn.

Nineteen. Ft. Wolters Texas in a US Army TH55 helicopter. I was last in my class to solo but ended up graduating second. Go figure. Just goes to show you that no matter how bad a time you're having and what people are doing around you, don't give up and don't let how long it takes for you to solo to get you worked up either way. The first three guys in may class to solo were dead before they got out of the army.

I was 17, and the airplane was a Cessna 120. All of that and I did it in Japan with the Yakota Aero Club. That was in 1957.I remember it as if were yesterday. Remember the instructor and we became friends for life, saw him all over the world many times thereafter.
