My Shelti will only go to the bathroom in our backyard. Not even on a walk where most dogs like to "mark" Which is fine most of the time, but even if we are on a long walk he can't wait to get home to go into the backyard to pee/poo. I am worried that if we are to go away for the weekend he won't go to the bathroom.... any ideas?

In response to one answer, he doesn't seem to be afraid of going to the bathroom in front of us, just as long as he is in the backyard.

Don't fret. Many dogs do not toilet on walks or when they are away from home, they'll hold on for as long as possible.

What you'll need to do is contact your Vet before going away, they can give you some mediction that will relax the bladder and the bowel incase the dog hasn't toileted in a few days.

But generally they just can't hold on any longer and will go.

Some dogs don't like to go "potty" away from home, if they can avoid it. Many will hold it as long as they possibly can, up to and including a couple of days. Mother Nature being what she is will require that your dog go at some point, no matter how much he wants to hold it in.

I would recommend that you not worry so much about it and enjoy taking your dog on some weekend trips. You may want to start out with shorter overnighters to get him accustomed to being away from home. And, while you're gone enjoy some time relaxing with your dog. When he does go appropriately, praise him.

If you have any further concerns, you can talk to your Veterinarian in advance of your trip and see if s/he suggests anything further.

Sweetheart, what do you think Shelti is going to do, hold it all weekend? When Shelti's got to go badly enough, he'll go. And when the back yard isn't available, the nearest patch of grass will do.

I know how he feels, though. There is no place so comfortable as my own litter box.

I had a pug that did that because I always had her go in our back yard. We did go away for the weekend and she stopped eating and drinking and did hold it until we returned home. I was mortified. I had to take her different places for longer periods of time so that she would be comfortable. Eventually she got over it.

My dogs the same, I read a book from petsmart and it basically said my husband and I messed up by disciplining my dog for going potty in the house ,because it made him fear us so now he will only potty in the back yard because it gives him room so that he can hide behind things too potty and, he makes sure we aren't watching usually when he goes potty.

My dog has a designated spot that he poops and wont go anywhere else as well. He marks his territory everywhere but I think that some dogs just do that.
