Don't do it, man. The Marines jip you so bad. There's no sign on bonus, their GI Bill is only like $500 a month, and they don't promote you, but rather give you E-6 jobs to do for E-4 pay.
The Marines have pretty uniforms, and that's about all they got going for them. If you want to do some hardcore stuff, talk to an Army recruiter about sending you to the Rangers. They'll put you into RIP as soon as you graduate from Benning. The pay me fair, and despite what any Marine might say, life in the Army is just as tough as it is in the Marines. And even more so if you're a Ranger. I just got back from basic, and despite what my former Marine recruiter told me, I can tell you first hand, there's no stress cards, no days off, no Pizza, no Gatorade, no trips to the PX. So don't get your hopes up, and don't fall for any of that high and mighty Marine Corps bullsh*t.

You join the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard for a fixed number of years.
I have never met a Marine that was not a Marine regardless of the date on his Discharge.
I am surprised Lava Dog did not metion that. Must be on his 360.

when you first enlist you will sign a contract for four years, maybe five depending on what you want, if you do five, in boot camp that will help to make you a platoon leader..and what the guy said about the rangers being harder then the marines is absoulty not true thats why basic and ranger training is shorter then the marines basic, and if you want to become the elitle become Marine Recon

Two things...
First, Marine is always capitalized... ALWAYS.
Second, if you're already trying to figure out when you can get out, the Marine Corps isn't for you. You have to know, deep in your gut, that you are meant to be a United States Marine in order to make it through boot camp. You clearly don't have that kind of drive...

Do everyone a favor and don't join. The U.S. Marines don't need someone with your "HAVE" to stay attitude and with that attitude you wouldn't make it far in the Marines.

The minimum enlistment is two year plus training time (at least it was in 1999). Under that option, however, your MOS options are rather limited.
