A combination of Aleve Gel Caps and Tylenol Ex. Strength.
Take 1 or 2 of each depending on your pain. The Aleve has naproxen in it, which is prescribed by alot of doctors for early arthritits type pain, and the tylenol is acetaminphine used for mild to moderate pain. Also use Bio Freeze on the area of his back that feels the worse. You can also alternate ice and heat 15 min each, with an hour break in between.
Best of luck to you, I hope he gets some pain relief soon.

I went through this. I had to have the rods taken out. I've had surgery on my back twelve times in about four years. It keeps degrading from severe osteo-arthritis now, just like that. So now I'm on a chronic drug relief program. It's not what you want but, what makes you comfortable.

You can take Ibuprofen 'till the cows come home, that may help some. I don't know of anything I've tried through time that has helped. There's also upper dermal shots to numbing the spine.

Be careful of some things like Aleve, a friend, after two years on Aleve poisoned her kidneys and had to go on dialysis, one kidney came back, one took six months for dialysis to work. She's part of a class action suit against Aleve now.

Try Ben Gay Ultra Strength patches. They work better than the ointment. Also try Therma Care heating pads. Both are really good but they may not be strong enough to remove the pain. They should at least help to some extent. Aleve should also be a good choice.
