I'm in agreement with the others in removing the chair rail. The furniture carries too much weight to have a two-toned room. I think a soft pale amber color, kind of like a light beer, would look scrumptious and warm. It would look awesome with your pictures too! For the trim, maybe a rusty-reddish color, also pulled from the artwork. Whatever you choose, I'm sure you will love your new room! That sofa looks really comfy!

I like the buttery tan of the sails or the green of the background trees for your walls. Do you like to surround yourself with the warmth of the sails or the cool of the green? Personally, I've been using a lot of greens lately because so many accessories look good with green--it is a color you see in all of nature. Green makes it easy to change the look of a room by just changing a few accessories. Why bother removing the chair rail? I find chair rails to actually be functional. They keep your furniture from getting bumped into the walls and causing dings. You could either leave the rail white or choose to paint it the same color as the wall color, which will allow it to fade into the background without having to remove it. I do think that I would paint the same color above and below the chair rail, either way. I love another responder's suggestions for accessories--especially if you are going for the British West Indies look: the mosquito nets or bamboo blinds, rattan fan blades, etc. You might stack up old leather luggage or trunks as tables--provides storage too. Enjoy your tropical retreat!

It seems as if that great furniture of yours is crowding the room because all that white trim and chair railing is so busy. I think the advice to paint a light goldish yellow to match the painting for your main color is great, since you don't want the room to seem small, and then someone else advised making the trim match the taupe/tan trim on your couch and chairs. You are correct that the current colors are just way to bright for your furniture and tastes.

You could take down the chair rail and do it all one color... Ithink the color of the trim on your couch pillows (the khaki-color) would be very nice.
If you want to keep the chair rail, paint the top the khaki color and the bottom a warm chocoalte brown.
Your new furniture looks great, btw!

I would get rid of the chair rail myself. You can use a pry bar to get that off, and then spackle the holes from the nails.
I would then take a color from your painting - that of the sail seems like it would look the best.
maybe do the trim in the green from the trees.
