Why is it so weird that I haven't had a birthday party in 18 years and I buy other people gifts on my birthday? I decided a long time ago that I didn't deserve gifts as a congratulations for being born, and that my birthday should be seen as my personal day to do something special for the people around me and to celebrate life in general. Everyone I know thinks that is the most weird thing ever. Does anyone see where I am coming from in my outlook and NOT think it's weird?

I really like that idea about having everyone bring a gift to a gathering, then having THEM play games where they exchange the gifts. That's really cool. :) Thanks, all.

I don't think I'm unworthy of receiving gifts and attention. It's just not necessary, and I make it perfectly clear to people that it isn't. I don't like it when people spend money on me because people need their money to take care of themselves. That's all it really is.

No, but if it makes you happy go for it. I'm all about the birthday and the birthday cake. I will say that you have a really nice outlook on life.

I do a similar thing, I pay for a meal for everyone or have people over and I give presents to my closest friends to show how much they mean to me.

I suppose someone might see it as weird because you don't think you deserve to have gifts bought for you, like you are unworthy. Having a birthday party and getting gifts isn't about showing off or anything, its about having fun with friends and family. You do deserve to have gifts given to you! It's not about just giving someone a present just because they were born, but because you're glad they were born and to celebrate them, I love it when my friends have birthdays and I like it when it's my turn :)

I don't think it is weird. On my birthdays I have always wanted my friends to each bring one gift and then we play games and at the end of the night, everyone recieves one gift that someone else brought. That way, we all have fun and end up taking something home...but none of my friends ever want to do that. So yeah, I don't think what you do is weird at all...ppl only think it is weird b/c it is uncommon for a person to do that. Most ppl are selfish on their birthdays and only think of themselves, so I am glad that you are one of the few that think of others =]

A birthday is the celebration of your existence not a congratulations for being born. Do what you want on your birthday but you should give others the right to celebrate your birthday for you as well.

I think that's pretty cool. It takes alot to be that unselfish and think about other people when you could very easily only be concerned with yourself. I think it's great that you do that, because it's not to often that we celebrate life these days.
I can understand why people would think it's weird. Most people would never give up a day set aside for themselves for other people, and I can't blame them. But I still think what you do is a great thing and would never stop it based on what other people think.

Hobbits give out gifts on their birthdays.

And in real life, my wife and her best friend decided a long time ago that they would each give one another presents on their own birthday rather than visa versa - wierd. Not at all!

Not only does it sound like you are being kind and generous with others, you get the best gift of all. You get to make others happy. Be proud of your tradition and forget what anybody else says about it.

What a perfectly splendid thought!
I think I'll start the same tradition.
I've always been uncomfortable receiving gifts on my birthday anyway.

Your birthday tradition is not weird. Your feelings in regards to your special day are unique & you are an awesome person because of it. Bless you.

Good Idea I wish someone in my life started this tradition but I am selfish on my birthday! You sound very mature.
