It bothers me because I will look at them and wish they would spend one day with someone retarded and maybe they would think before speaking. When they say that is so gay I often wonder how would they know that? Are they gay?

I am VERY guilty of both terms. I openly shout- that is so gay! Or stop acting retarded!
I do not mean them in those correct terms per say, it was just slang that I say. However, I have learned to ween the words considering I have gay friends and my brother in law is handicapped. But I still spew forth every now and again.
i am not perfect, nor do I aim them at people directly. So at any offended people, I apologize.

people tend to be too loose with their words. i am guilty of this as well. sad thing is i work with children with special needs, and i have slipped and used the derogatory description 'retarded' to make fun of one of my friends. albeit, i was drunk. still, there is no excuse for being offensive. however, words are quite arbitrary. they are simply groups of letters, it is the meaning WE infuse into those words that makes them powerful. perhaps if we cared less words like gay and retarded (used in a derogatory manner, because they are not bad words) would be less demeaning.

No. I understand what they mean. Both phrases have passed into coloquial speech and are almost never meant as a genuine insult to retarded or gay people.

OK, yes it does, but maybe for the wrong reasons...
I work with mentally impaired people, you'd be surprised
of what they do know.. & how much heart they have!
As for the 'gay' thing...even my gay friends know what that
means and have used that phrase themselves.. it's all
about the context & the company in which it is used.

Yes. I work with people with intellectual disabilities (retardation), by using 'you are a retard' as an insult to someone is also an insult to all people with intellectual disabilities.

I think it shows a lack of respect definately. I look at it in the same vane as phrases like "that is very white of you" or "I jewed them down.." I don't like to hear them myself...they have an feeling of degredation and cruelty to them.
