Hushpuppies are finger-shaped dumplings of cornmeal that are deep-fried and traditionally served with fried catfish. Also know as corn dodgers, they are especially popular throughout the South.

They are very yummy pieces of deep fried Corn meal and yummy goodness =) Sometimes I will order just hushpuppies when I go to a restaurant lol.

Hushpuppies

INGREDIENTS:
2 cups sifted fine stone ground white corn meal
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon minced yellow onion
1 egg
1 cup buttermilk
4 to 5 tablespoons cold water

PREPARATION:
Stir corn meal, sugar, soda and salt together. Place onion in a small bowl. Add egg and buttermilk and beat until frothy. Pour all at once into the meal and stir lightly to mix. Add just enough of the cold water to make dough a good dropping

The dough should hold its shape in the spoon. Drop by tablespoonfuls into hot oil (about 350 to 360°) in deep fat fryer for about 2 minutes or until evenly browned, turning to keep all sides evenly browned.
Makes about 2 dozen.

Deep fried corn meal. A favorite in the South where I'm from me make them part of (well almost) every meal. You can make them into a finger shape of a ball or a ring or any shape you want. Typically round or finger shaped is used. If you have never had them I suggest try them specially with lots of whipped honey butter. Hope this helps

hushpuppies are a form of cornbread. they cook up quicker and are crispier than bread. they were created in the south by cowboys to keep their dogs quite. they would throw a piece of their cornbread to the dog and say hush puppy. therefore they became hushpuppies. they are deep fried in hot oil. i love them.
