I love this question because it reveals the true intent of the biblical scholar. If they like war and destruction its alway murder then you can apply your own definition of murder. Kill is pretty precise and demands you to be basically a pacifist.

One thing of importance is that New Hampshire is a state where open carry is legal everywhere (other than courthouses, schools etc.) and closed carry permits are shall-issue. Vermont also has very few gun laws. I don't think the Brady Campaign is very effective in the Mountain West either (Montana's Democrat governor actually threatened secession if the Supreme Court ruled in favor of DC's gun ban). Obviously, the south's lack of gun control is not the problem (otherwise, there would be a lot of murders in non-southern states without gun control and states like California, Michigan, and Maryland would probably have much lower crime rates). I suspect that it may have something to do with the cultural conservatism that is rampant in these states. southerners do tend to be really nasty toward gays and atheists (and probably followers of non "Judeo-Christian" religions as well) and are probably more likely to abuse children. I suspect that the crime rates are lower in other regions because the culture is more tolerant. However, Nevada is definitely an exception to this rule, though I suspect that people who choose to live in Nevada are more likely to live a high risk lifestyle that makes them more likely to be murdered. Hawaii is an exception on the right to keep and bear arms rule, but Hawaii is known for its very friendly culture. So, it does appear that a combination of a strong right to keep and bear arms and a tolerant culture is the best way to prevent crime.

Thou Shalt Not Murder is the correct translation!

It may be easy for man to rationalize killing, but you have no clue what God means. To actively participate in a war that kills thousands in God's eye's may be, and probably is, murder.

And orchid, I don't agree with you! Killing 60,000 civilians for oil I think God would consider murder! You can't make commandments fit your definition!

A Vegetarian would say 'thou shalt not kill.' and recognise the full stop at the end of it meant there were no provisos.

A Xian would think what the invisible man really meant to say was "thou shalt not murder" without a full stop so he could add other things the invisible man really wanted to say but he ran out of room and time before he could do so. LOL

The Commandment "Thou Shall not Kill" Should not be taken 100% Literally. Yes it does mean "Don't murder people" But it also means don't "kill" or hurt your own body. So everytime you deliberately cause harm to your self, you are breaking this commandment.
A lot of people think that they don't break this commandment since they don't go out killing people, but in fact every time you smoke, do drugs, drink excessively, or harm your body in anyway, you are actually breaking this commandment.
Eitherway, any kind of violence or harm directed towards others, or yourself breaks this commandment

The correct translation of the original Hebrew word is thou shalt not commit murder! Executing a criminal by the proper authorities is excluded, as is killing your enemy in a war, or shooting a intruder or someone trying to commit violence on you or your loved ones.

No, personally, I do *not* like war and destruction, and murder is defined by legal authority, *not* by oneself!

Thou shall not murder. The ancient Hebrew was 'not murder'. I don't have my Hebrew/English dictionary with me right now. Murder meant(s) to take the life of an innocent person. To kill is to defend one's life or to defend a love one or nation.

Both mean the same.We do not war and destruction but it is necessary sometimes to same innocent victims. It is in the Bible if you have ever read more than a page or two.

But isnt there passages in the bible that prescribe that people be stoned to death and put to death for doing certain things? Then if thou shalt not kill who is the one that is supposed to be doing the stoning and stuff?

The correct translation from Hebrew is thou shalt not murder. If it had been kill, there wouldn't be any Jews left. Laws of god would have them killed for their killing of their enemies. Remember, god told them to kill.
