Just because he made a mistake doesn't mean he'll try to lowball and derail everyone serving under him. You never know, other than the one conviction he could be a damn good NCO who takes care of his Marines.

Humans make mistakes. And being a Marine, he has obviously dedicated his life to serving his country. Why should this first time offense prevent him from doing good? Saying you're not allowed to do good anymore by being a leader in the Corps is not the solution to doing a wrong like that. Two wrongs don't make a right...
Furthermore, I'm pretty sure theres no such thing as "unpromotable" at that rank. If he makes a career out of the Marines a servicemen having served for twenty years and still being that low a rank would raise some serious eyebrows. I have no doubt promotions will be difficult, bugt again, I doubt he's unpromotable.
Just my thoughts...

Yeah, that sucks but the same scenario can happen in any job or career. Fortunately in the Marine Corps that SNCO's career is done and the damage he can cause is limited. I know that doesn't help your situation. There are measures in place to correct this. If the Staff Sergeant is blatant and intentional in his actions your husband should use his chain of command to bring awareness to the issue. In the Marine Corps assessment process only the commanding officer actually gives the scores (pro and con marks and Fit Reps). While he may rely on what the NCO's and SNCO's recommend it is ultimately his decision to accept or change the marks.

This is unfortunate. Military ******* who abuse their authority. I have run into this problem NUMEROUS times and it's frustrating. I gave up holding my tongue a couple of times and got spanked. Oh well.
Getting a DUI should mean being immediately relieved of command and locked up in the brig. But apparently this chump has the commanders d*** in his a**. And blaming others for his stupidity so no one gets promoted is just MORE stupidity. It's stupidity squared and shows a real lack of character and maturity.
This guy shouldn't even be in theater. His resentment just might get others killed because he doesn't give a s***.
The commander of his unit needs to get that moron out of there.

i see where you are coming from but honestly there is no good chance of fighting it (not saying that you guys are)...look at it this way...if he joined he took that oath...if he does not follow it....its on him....eventually your hubby will get his promotion when he deserves it....i do not think that a DUI should go onto him militarry record anyway....and if they were going to do anything they should have demoted him....i was in JROTC for 4 years and then ROTC for another 4...i got into some trouble whil in ROTC and got demoted (went from CSM(Command Sergeant Major) to SSG(Staff Sergeant)) Just because of a Misdamenor....Granted ROTC is not the Marines or anyhting like that...but it's still the same guide lines....I would like to talk more about this matter.....E-mail me if you would like to.....
Take care
God Bless your Hubby and everyone else fighting for our freedom!

DUI / DWI is not a good situation for anyone.
I can appreciate what you are saying, but if we implemented the standard you proposed to the civilian populace and all respective job vocations, it would prove to be highly impractical. Servicemen are already accountable to both military and civilian laws.

With this line of reasoning, then the majority of people serving in local, state, and federal government shouldn't have any authority and should be fired. Including the President and most of his administration.

Yeah, I can see how your husband might want to make up a story like that to mask his deservedly lackluster performance reports. It's always someone else's fault.
