For the last 18 months my life has been in turmoil. I've literally been through hell and back, and now it's finally coming to an end,and I'd like a tat to reflect that . I originally wanted a dragonfly, like flying out of flames, but thought that might seem strange. Since I posted here alot, was looking for ideas from people. I was also considering a phoenix rising from the ashes. Any ideas would be fantastic, thanks! Please keep in mind I'm 40,and already have 4 tats. (Big toe, either ankle and left shoulder.)

Oh,I should've said what I've already got. I've got a sun/moon/stars/fairy piece on my left ankle, right has a rose that is connected with shamrocks to a claddah on my inside ankle, and I've got a butterfly on my big toe,and a bumble bee on my left shoulder.

Dragonflies are one of the most ancient of insects. They predate the dinosaurs and are the earths first fliers. From their nymph stage, it can take a month or two..up to 2 to even 3 years, to metamorphosis into being an adult. Not unlike some people..me included.
I think it is a great idea. You don't need the flames.
Dragonflies speak for themselves. They represent the stages and challenges that we all go through. It can pretty much be understood by anyone, who has gone through their own metamorphosis.
If you love them, gott'a get one. Ink Is For Life

Why not a dragonfly? It's unique and you thought of it. A phoenix is pretty too, and it least it requires no explaination, but I'd go with some sort of eleborate knot pattern that's been severed by a sword, if it was my body. After the 'Gordian Knot' Alexander the Great cut (thus solving a problem that had stumped many, and claiming a city).

Phoenix rising from the ashes is always a good traditional tatoo. Make sure you find an artist that will pay close attention to quality and detail. This is not a picture you want second rate work on. Have fun!

Awesome that you made it through a terrible time in your life! Good for you! I think a tattoo is a very special, very personal way to commemorate such a huge victory. A phoenix sounds cool (I've always wanted one) but it's kind of overdone and not very personal. There's a story about a kind of flower that grows after an area of forest has been burned by wildfire. (I live in a wildfire area....) I always thought a 'fireflower' would be a beautiful symbol of life after great hardship. Good luck!

very, very cool! each of my 3 tattoos mark a life-triumph, too!

as for ideas, i know it sounds simplistic but i once saw this beautiful, really artistic "sun" on someone and i was mesmerized by it... the design, the colors -- it actually looked like the flames were in motion...stunning!

symbolically, it'll remind you that you've gotten thru some pretty tough times and the "sun" always came out shining for ya'!!!

if you have some good artists where you are, i bet they could design you an awesome "sun"...

and kudos to you for enduring through your tramatic time!!! :)

I completely agree with clamshell. Dragonfly would be perfect. Have it done in your favorite colors. maybe add a little flower to it. And Voila! You have a beautiful piece of art:)
