Brother this is a scripture I lean on often.
First let me say that one of my brothers was mistaken with his answer. He said the elect will be deceived. The elect will not be deceived.
The very end of that scripture it says "," they shall deceive the very elect. NOTICE THE COMMA. Before that is says, if it were possible.
What this scripture is saying is that these FALSE CHRISTS and FALSE PROPHETS shall show great wonders, he will deceive many. These false men with be so deceiving that all but the chosen of God will think that this is God and the working of God.
The elect will not be deceived because it is not possible.
Those who are not the elect WILL BE DECEIVED.

Those chosen by God before the foundation of the world..predestined. Romans all people were made for his purpose. Romans 9 He raised up some for a time such as it was. God got the glory out of it.
Gods aim is to give enough time to the world so all the elect will repent and be saved. 2 timothy 3:7 stop being a struggling skeptic. James 1:5 pray for wisdom. Ezekial 18:32 God has no pleasure in the death of anyone.Matthew 22:4 many are called but few are chosen.

The end of this wicked system will come in what is called “the great tribulation.” (Rev. 7:14) The Bible does not tell us how long that will last, but Jesus said: “Then there will be great tribulation such as has not occurred since the world’s beginning until now, no, nor will occur again.” (Matt. 24:21) When we consider the tribulation that this world has already experienced, such as in World War II when an estimated 50 to 60 million lives were lost, the coming great tribulation will be very severe indeed. It will reach its climax in the battle of Armageddon. That is when Jehovah will unleash his executional forces to destroy every vestige of Satan’s earthly system.—Rev. 16:14, 16. Bible prophecy does not give a date for the first phase of the great tribulation to begin, though it does tell us what extraordinary event will signal its start. That event is the destruction of all false religion by the political powers. In Bible prophecies found in Revelation chapters 17 and 18, false religion is likened to a harlot who has had immoral intercourse with the political systems of the earth. Revelation 17:16 shows that the time will soon come when these political elements “will hate the harlot and will make her devastated and naked, and will eat up her fleshy parts and will completely burn her with fire.” When the time comes for that to happen, God will “put it into their [the political rulers’] hearts to carry out his thought” to destroy all false religion. (Rev. 17:17) So this destruction can be said to come from God. It is his judgment against hypocritical religion that for so long has taught doctrines contrary to God’s will and that has persecuted his servants. The world in general does not anticipate this coming destruction of false religion. But Jehovah’s faithful servants do. And throughout these last days, they have been telling people about it. It will be a great shock for people to see false religion destroyed. Bible prophecy shows that even some of “the kings of the earth” are going to declare regarding that destruction: “Too bad, too bad, . . . because in one hour your judgment has arrived!” (Rev. 18:9, 10, 16, 19) The Bible’s use of the words “one hour” shows that this event will take place relatively swiftly.

I have read the whole bit of this from Matthew 24: 1 to 35, not just this verse in isolation, and I read it as the "elect" being the church....because when Jesus returns He will gather up the church first, and verse 31 says ....He will gather up the elect from the four winds from one end of the Heavens to the other.......
Those who are not the elect will be left behind, , they still have a chance to repent and turn to God, but as the Earth will be so filled with evil, false prophets - on a scale nothing like today - etc that they will find it near impossible.....also because Jesus has already gathered is own to Him, and will not return again until the REAL end, when all ends........
Please feel free to correct me or constructively challenge my interpretation of this.... my mind and knowledge is really being stretched and taught by your thoughtful questions Don S, and the interesting and thought provoking answers given.

Who are the "elect"? In the Old Testament, "elect" refers to Israel, particularly those who are faithful to God (see 1 Chronicles 16:13; Psalm 105:43; Isaiah 65:9, 15; Daniel 12:1). In the New Testament, "elect" refers to the church—all believers (Romans 8:33; Colossians 3:12; 2 Timothy 2:10; 1 Peter 1:1-2). In this verse, the words "elect" and "chosen" refer not to Old Testament Jews but to all faithful believers, whether Jews or Gentiles. Paul wrote, "For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son. . . . Those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified" (Romans 8:29-30 nrsv). Some believe that these verses mean that before the beginning of the world, God chose certain people to receive his gift of salvation. Others believe that God foreknew those who would respond to him and upon those he set his mark (predestined). What is clear is that God's purpose for people was not an afterthought; it was settled before the foundation of the world.

I don't believe that the elect are what most of your other answerers have said. The Bible says the "even the elect will be deceived." So this can't just mean that the elect are true followers of God. God's true followers will not be deceived. The elect are the leaders of our churches and maybe even our government. Those who have studied and have a high intelligence of the Bible, such as pastors. However, they are not following all the truth according to the Bible. They have taken some false teachings that have come from man not God and incorrpurated them into their churches. Believing that they are following the truth. I know of some pastors who are not teaching certain things truthfully. I have asked them about it. They have admitted it, but can not give me a straight answer why they do it.
The non elect are the followers in the church. They need to be very careful. No matter what church you belong to or what your pastor is teaching you. You always have to study and find out for yourself what the Bible says. We are responsible for our own souls not the pastor. Many people in many churches just go to church listen to the Pastor and do what he/she says. They do not question. The Bible says we are to test all things. Those who do not take the time to study the Bible on their own are in danger of losing eternal life.
On the other hand I also believe that there are true sincere Christians in darkness. Meaning they have never heard or understand some of the truths of the Bible. But in their heart they are true to God. Follow him in all they know. They are following God according to the light they have. These people will have eternal life even if they are not following all the truth.
God does not condemn sincere people in darkness. But once a glimpse of truth and more light comes to anyone and they refuse to accept it. Many people do this because they are happy with their life style and don't want to change. If they refuse the new light and do not follow it they will not inherit eternal life.

I believe it is the Jews (the 144,000) because if you read the verses before Matt 24:24, Jesus is talking about the Jews.Read from 24:16 where it says "Then let those who are IN JUDEA flee to the mountains. then, the passages after that are all referring to those in Judea. The Jews.

The answer to that question depends on your Theological bent: Calvinism or Arminianism. It is a highly debated issue and has been going on since the Reformation.
