I'd say be there by 6:30 or so, and check in and get through security as soon as you can. Mornings are usually pretty busy at airports... well, everywhere or so it seems, as most people need to get out of where they're leaving pretty early in the day. I'd say give yourself about 2 hours or so, just to make sure that you've got enough time. You don't want to get there and have the flight close up boarding before you get through security.

You also should probably take a look at the security rules if you haven't flown in a while (and since you're asking how early you need to get to the airport, I'm assuming you don't fly on a weekly basis), so go to TSA's website, www.tsa.gov.

And note that the liquid/gel restrictions apply only to your carry-on luggage and that the restrictions apply to things like toothpaste, shaving cream, hand lotion, etc. so pretty much anything that isn't a solid or gas is restricted. And you should probably relieve yourself of your gas before you get on the plane. ;)

Get there by 6:30 - 7 at the latest. Check in and Security lines can be long - especially now a days, and if you check your bags less than 45 minutes before your scheduled departure time, you can be denied boarding.... It's better to have time to putz around at the gate than be crazy running to it!

aim to be in the check-in line at 7:30. you really don't need two hours lead for a domestic flight...you don't need 90 minutes, either, but there is some risk associated with every transportation option, so you have to expect the unexpected. if something unusual is going on at the airport (check-in delays, security delays, etc.) they will take this into account when clearing flights for departure and it will not cause you to miss your flight.

I would get there no later than 7am, you just never know when it comes to JFK. Better to have extra time inside the gate, then to get stuck in security and never make the gate
