#1- Bass, pike, musky and big gills redear an crapipe!
#2- Try to cast out let it settle on surface for a minute and make small short twitches then a few more aggresive pops with it then frog swim it back to you!
#3- Early mornings around lillies, wood, weed lines where bass wait to ambush. Heat of the day near heavy cover and drops off shallow weeds. Night time make sound and settle bait with twitches and movement!
#4- I make shorter cast with most topwater baits for more control. I want to place bait in ideal position and work the cover as best I can with top baits. Also learn to let the fish take the bait sometimes we react to the fish exploding on the lure and miss the fish. This happens from the water forcing the lure forward as the bass rises also the lure may ride the weeds before it is the fishes mouth!
The hula popper has been a good lure for many years and has outlasted many super baits!

Hula Poppers

Top water fishing is the "pinnacle" of any type of fishing.

Probably the hardest kind of "lure-fishing" is Top-water "plugging". You don't learn when, where, and how "over-night".

In most "lure-fishing", you ,(generally), cast out and retrieve slowly.

But in "Topwater", there are many different techniques to successfully plug that coincides/relates MORE drastically with the weather, temp, light, cover, how far you cast, line diameter, etc.

Ask yourself: How many B.A.S.S. tourneys have been won where the winner used only a topwater lure? (None!)

A general guideline is:

1. Try to Topwater plug during "low-light" conditions.("Low-light" isn't just "dawn & dusk". It could also mean during heavily overcast days. Or, under a super-dark shadow; the shadow cast by a bridge or large structure, Etc.)

2. Try to discern if the lake/pond your fishing is a "quiet" lake/pond, or an "active/loud" lake/pond. (and then "fish" accordingly!)

FYI: Hula Poppers work there best near wood structure/basic structure. Hula's were designed to mimic "frogs/baby turtles" jumping or "plopping" into a lake/pond. Also, "dose" them heavily with "Baitmate" or "Bang" Bass attractant.

A "sequence" with a Hula:

Cast. Wait for ripples to slowly "die" off. Chug. Wait 10-15 secs. Chug again. Wait 15-25 secs. Chug once more. Wait 6 secs. Usually, your "strike" will happen between your 2nd and 3rd chug.

Cast to another "nearby" location that has structure.

Just remember that Topwater fishing is the hardest Bass-fishing technique to learn correctly. "Walking the Dog", "Chugging", "Popping", is TOUGH stuff!

Don't give up! Hope you get one!

(PS: Unlike Ingun, I like to keep my topwater plug "away" from me as far as possible. Just remember, generally, if you can "see the fish" than "he can see you". It makes trying to "fool" a fish tougher if he can see you and the "fake" food your peddling!)

1) This is a Bass plug
2) Retrieve slowly so the lure wiggles side to side and makes a 'popping' sound.
3) Anytime of the night or day is fine.
4) Cast out as far as you can, even if its to the other side.

a) It is always good to try and cast it near a tree or log in the water. (don't get snagged!)
b) You can use these in places with lots of plants in the water
c) You can sometimes stop and let the lure rest for a few seconds and start again with a slow retrieval

1;bass,panfish,etc.
2;slow retrieve,twicthing&popping the lure,you should hear a popping noise
3;use it if you know the fish are feeding at the surfuce
4;don't cast in the middle, try casting parallel to the shore line
Good Luck!
