Its not the most natural thing for us to do... but as we grow in the Christian life its something that develops in you. It comes from a life of abiding. Of opening up yourself to the Lord each day and telling Him to have a way to gain your heart from all other things and to be exclusively for Him.
He desires us to pray without ceasing...Even when we do not know how we should pray as is fitting the Spirit prays within us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Our praying unceasingly comes out of our speading time throughout our day contacting the Lord in prayer. Our capacity to pray grows as we grow in the Lord. To suddenly pray without stopping is not possible. THe Lord is not asking us to lock ourselves up in a room and be oblivious to whats going on in the world and pray pray pray.
But learning to come to the throne of Grace ...no matter where we are and contacting the Lord in spirit to have a sense of what is on His heart is a most precious thing.
He has His Will in the Heavens and desires us to pray on the earth to have this Will in the heavens fullfilled on the earth.
As we grow our capacity to pray grows.. and we can develop a "prayer life". Its actually good to set aside some time each day.. specifically to pray.. like daniel in the bible did... this disciplined prayer time gives the Lord someone he can count on to carry out His Will through prayer...God knew He could count on Daniel to be in prayer concerning many matters at that time..,
may many many more of God's children be the means for God to do His will on the earth through praying at everytime in spirit...

Praying without ceasing is an attitude of heart.
Do we allow God's principles, counsel, laws guide us in all of our decisions and actions.
All Christians should strive with the help of the holy spirit to maintain a humble prayerful attitude during all waking hours.
How does this action / decision effect my relationship with Jehovah?
How does this action / decision effect my family including my spiritual brothers and sisters?
How does this action / decision effect those whom I witness to?
(Comment to your statement about thumbs down -
This may result not by WHAT you say, but HOW you say it.
'You are not sick again?' can be said with loving concern
or as an accusation.
I personally, rarely give a thumbs down, but I've given many a thumbs up.
I hope this helps)

I always thought that verse meant to keep a close connection to God always, in that we speak to Him as though He were standing next to us. I know it would be literally impossible to pray all the time, as there is this little thing called life we are supposed to live too! lol

It is almost impossible to literally do this. We would have time for nothing else. But I am constantly in prayer, not always formally, lengthy, or on bended knee. But I do ask for protection, guidance and wisdom throughout the day, as well as giving thanks for the missed accidents, finding something at the grocery store on sale, and the call from one of my daughters..............etc

I try to keep an open daily contact ...or dialog going with God.... but on my knees...gut wrenching prayer...No not often....Usually when I am crying out to him.....I try to at least formally pray before I go to sleep..........I get prayer blocked very easily though, ...that is due to my past and having a hard time with feeling loved by god.

Someone explained it this way once: Have you "stopped" praying? If not, you're praying incessantly. Makes sense to me.

Honestly, no. I've been working on it though. To keep that open communication with God.
