My doctor knows I drink on occasion, yet when he prescribed me the depakote, he never mentioned that it was dangerous to have a few beers while taking it. I dont know if it slipped his mind, or if it wasnt a factor. Anyways, just courious what you would think....Is it relativly safe to have a few beers a few hours before I take my bedtime 250mg depakote?

You really shouldn't drink with Depakote. Chances are you'd be OK if you drank in moderation but you really don't want to take that chance. Talk to your doctor about hat he might think is a safe alcohol intake with Depakote.

I have a family member who was on Depakote for a period of time & was told to not drink any alcohol at all. He drank anyway and had to go into rehab with stage 1 liver disease because of the interaction of Depakote & alcohol. His dosage was quite a bit higher than yours. (He is clean and sober now, but no longer taking Depakote.) If it were me, I would not drink at all. If you choose to drink, please have your doctor check your liver panels often.

Hello!
I have to take medication, and have been on Depakote! My doctors were pretty strict about alcohol! Absolutely no alcohol! Any time! We were given only one body and we have to take care of it. I have friends who take meds and alcohol, and just can't figure out why they are blacking out! I say "NO"! Learn to have fun without it!

The Drug information online says:

"Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication."

So I wouldn't if I were you.
