I actually had this SAME problem about a month ago. I went with MCE 2005.
I, for one, find the layout of XP a lot better than Vista.
Also, because XP has been out for a while (and isn't going anywhere soon) driver support is no problem. All but a few really old or "Vista Only" games run fine in XP. I've heard from a friend who runs Vista that some games have minor glitches while running Vista.
To top it off, your pc's video card would not handle the eye candy in Vista at all well. You would have to get a new video card if that's what you wanted.

Vista MIGHT be worth it in another year or so (give Microsoft time to work out the bugs) but for the here and now, Windows XP is a much better bet.

I have vista ultimate and my son has windows media center. his computer is 64 my computer is 32. I am very happy with vista I paid $400.00 for that software my computer hp Pentium 4 2GB ram I had to buy a new video card, anew sound card, a new scanner, a new printer, four or five of my software did not work with vista.with the money I spent I could have bought a new computer, Other wise I like vista it is strong secure you have to get used to it. the first week you don't like it but you get used to it. that's what happened when xp was new, I remember at that time I paid $300.00 for xp and I had to replace the scanner and the printer and Roxio software.
any way it is your decision but the future for vista for sure.

When I bought my laptop it had the logo "Windows Vista Capable!" so I upgrade it to Windows Vista Ultimate (Clean Upgrade) and I have 93GB and it runs FINE! you have 160 GB so it will run way better than mine! I recommend you to upgrade to Vista because it's better than XP and as you said "Vista really the future"

Good luck!

Stick with XP, Vista still has a lot of bugs. My printer and wireless USB adaptor wouldn't work. I had to do research to find new drivers to make these things work.
I found some help for Vista at this website.

do not upgrade any computer from xp to vista. if u want vista buy a new pc. finding drivers for the hardware in ur computer will be painful and not worth it.

you'll need more RAM if you want Vista to be happy.

XP MCE 2005 is good and I wouldn't jump to Vista.

There is no reason to buy it.
