Your dog would be happiest inside, and even though he looks happy, he would be happier inside. Here is how u solve your problem. Get a tape or dvd of fireworks or thunder that makes the sound. Put your dog in a crate or confined area where he can listen to the tape. Put the tape on low, and if he seems calm for 5-15 minutes(preferably 10), the put the sound higher, but if he starts to freak out(whining or really freaking out) go back a step, but don't turn off the tape. If you do, the your rewarding his bad behavior, and he'd be more likely to do it next time. Also, if he whines the don't say something like "did the loud noise hurt your ears," because you'd be rewarding his bad behavior. Make sure that if he's calm then give him treats and plenty of praise. Good Luck!

Comforting him only reinforces to him that his scared behavior is correct. It is best to ignore this behavior. The only way to help with this is to do behavior modification. Gradually exposing him to noise with a tape recorder set at a low level and slowly increasing. This has to take place over a slow period of time, and done correctly. Contact a dog behavior specialist for more details on how to do this right. Drug therapy may be needed in some cases.

It's important the he has a safe place to go during a storm. I am assuming he is in the house with you. By all means pet him and tell him it's okay but don't go overboard or you will only convince him that there's really something to be afraid of. Keep yourself calm and go on with your normal routine but chances are he will always be afraid. I have two here like that and they shake all over at the first sign of rain. If I am home, they climb in my lap and we watch TV together. Then as soon as the storm is over, they leave me high and dry. LOL

Protect him from getting loose and running amuck! Maybe in time you can take him to a target practice and he will get used to the report of fireworks to some extent, however all dogs and animals hate explosions.

just make sure that he has a area that he can hide in. My sheltie hides in the bath tub or under the couch. You might try looking on the internet to see if there any herbal help. Yes do not comfort the it does make it worse not better. Just let him go hide some where.

Keep your dog in the house. You comfort they are still scared. My dog does the same thing. Nothing you can really do, that's who your dog is.

First off, is your dog inside??? He probably is...there really is nothing you can do about it...its a natural dog instinct, comforting him is the right thing to do...keep it up

Comforting and reassuring him is pretty much all you can do, other than trying to distract him when it thunders. Unfortunately, most dogs hate loud noises.
