When he bites/hits, right away put him in his crib for a certain time. When you take him out lots of hugs and kisses. And that's right a good slap on his bottom is a good thing. Either that or they'll be putting him in alternative schools when he's older. Nip it in the bud!

You notice only one person said not to bit back and it was a counselor? This should tell you something. If the child continues to hit and bite you need to punish him by putting him in his crib for 30 minutes and stick to it. If they continue just give him more time in the crib pretty soon they learn that you are the boss.

A little pinch on the bum or a slap on the hand (lightly) or bite him back and tell them its not nice to hit or bite. Once they do it and you do it back a few times they will realize that it hurts when they do it to others the same as when they get slapped.
At that young age, they dont realize that they are actually hurting someone and lash out. Once they know it hurts they will stop. If you dont teach them now, it will only grow and when hes older will have a lot of trouble.
You HAVE to teach them what they do effects others and not just them.

you have an unruly child and you dont want to spank ? No this child is biting and could bite someone else's child yet you dont see the need for a swat on the bottom. My dear you do need to swat that child . believe me even a 16 month old knows about being bad and good . You need to swat only way to stop the biting and hiting . good luck.

Spank his bottom! If you continue to allow him to behave like a little bratty kid, then he will only grow up to be a bully in school! To spare the rod is to spoil the child!
Also what the poster said above. My mom bit my brother back when he would bite when we were all young and I tell you what, his bratty behavier stopped cold turkey because he knew what it felt like! A child needs to know his or her limits! period!
and anyone who says it's "normal progression" for a child is full of crap! You can stop this right now if you were brave enough to not allow your kid to get away with this. It's what bullies are made of!

Normal progression for children: biting as toddler, then hitting as preschooler, then yelling in elementary, then stomping as 4th to 6th. After that they find better ways to express their feelings. He'll grow out of it but usually a firm NO and some kind of consequences (like no tv or time out) is enough. We save spanking for really dangerous behavior like running out in the street.

I'm not going to weigh in with ideas on this one. I'm a therapist, mom of two, and use spanking with my children. I'll just echo the consistency theory. Whatever you decide do it every time. Good luck!

from my own experience with my own son, he was about 17 months when he started to do the same. And like you didn't want to spank him. But when all attemps failed to work, one day he hit me, I hit him back in the same manner he hit me. He hit me again, I hit him right back but a bit harder. He didn't know what to think. I told him from then on if he was to hit someone, they may hit back, but alot harder.
After all, there is no time like right now to show the child there is repercutions for there actions. NO MATTER HOW OLD THEY ARE.

what worked when you were a child? Didn't you turn out okay?
16 month olds dont change that much with time. What worked for you will work for your child.

I gotta agree with the majority here on this. One good bite from Mommy and I bet he will be a changed man. I tried everything with mine until I became so frustrated one day that I just chomped his little arm. That was it. He never bit anyone again.
