Writing paid in full on the check doesn't settle the debt. Many will say it does but it has no legal standing.
If you owed me $10 and sent me $5 saying paid if full I could cash it and you would still owe the other $5.

To settle a debt have them send you something in writing saying they will accept your offer of settlement.

You can write at "For" my last payment on the check. This is not mean your debt is paid off. You just do that to have something for yourself to look at if you don't remember later. You might still owe them for something, but you have a prove of wrote that check. Check writing is not settle your debt, but I think chane gave you something that might give you the answered you were looking for. However, I think just about everyone here gave you the best answers.

Ship is correct. Simply writing paid in full does not mean the debt is settled. It will not stand up in most courts. You must get something from the company you owe in writing stating what they will accept as payment in full.

Freds is correct.

Ship assumes that the payee cashes the check.... if the payee of the check does not cash the check, the debt is still outstanding.

again - check with a legal advisor.
